I just picked up my first shotgun today, an 870 express tactical. Currently I have it with the chamber halfway loaded (bolt half closed), safe on. so pick it up, safe off, slide forward, ready to go. Does anyone else do this? Any suggestions? Thanks.

IAC 982 chambered, fully loaded (now with upgraded Choate mag extension), safety on, sitting besides my bed, barrel up with an ammo sleeve on the buttstock. Still would like to mount a light on it in the future.

Same here. I got in a discussion in another thread where somebody was questioning why I would run my shotty in condition 3 when the sound of racking the slide would give away my position. My argument was that the sound would hopefully scare them away. I see pros and cons of both arguments, still trying to decide but for now I'm in condition 3.Comment

I haven't picked up my HD 500-persuader/cruiser 12 ga, 10 day wait almost over.
When I get it, it will go in our master bedroom closet over the door frame, so not easy to see if someone sticks their head in there. I haven't decided if I will keep one in chamber or not.
Next to the bed is night stand with over-sized top that hides behind it a S&W 686 in holster loaded. It will be the first thing I grab, if time allows I then get the shotty. Also the door of the closet is going to be reinforced and 3 long dead bolts, so my wife can go in there as a safe room, she will have the shotgun there if someone tries to break through.
My current thinking is the 686 for me to use confronting an intruder. If there are multiple vandals on the property of trying to enter, a shotgun makes most groups think "RUN"!
Hopefully the layers of security I have installed will deter/scare, and alert us to intruders before they enter the premises, and thus not have to solely rely on last resort weapons.sigpicComment

By the bed, tube full, chamber empty, slide closed, hammer down, safety off. Racking the slide becomes part of the motion of picking up and shouldering the gun.
I wouldn't leave the slide half-racked, asking for junk to get in there and prevent you from closing it, or a jam if you unintentionally pick up and rack the slide *back* instead of forwards.Originally posted by CSACANNONEERAh, the old "form over function" argument. in the daytime it's in the safe. night time it is under the bed on my side. mossberg 930. bolt forward, 5 rounds in tube, safety off. just gotta grab and rack charging handle.
glock19 in nightstand, 10 in mag +1 in chamber.Competition is where you find out you're slow, can't see well, are not accurate, have poor gun handling, can't visualize, have equipment that doesn't work and either accept it OR DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

Remmy 870 one in the pipe ready to go -just have to take the safety off. Don't want to give up any tactical advantage by racking the slide if i need to use it (god forbid).NRA Life Member
