I'm sure gibby will help pay for the difference
Either one is fine and will do you good on a trap range.
A few suggestions.
Get one with a vent ribbed barrel. When you shoot lots of rounds in a short period of time, the ribs help direct the convection away from the line of sight. After 15-20 shots on the trap line with more to come, you'll know what I mean.
Get one with choke tubes. IC or mod is OK to start with on the 16 yard line, but an adjustable choke gives you the flexibility to switch to a full choke when moving back.Comment

Personally I like the Mossberg 500 cause of where the safety and forend release is, especially if you plan on keeping the field stock. If I decide I want a shotgun with a pistol grip I'll probably go with the Remington, but then again hopefully I'll have enough for a Benelli M4

It's easier to put aftermarket parts on a Rem 870, but if you don't plan on modding it much anyway, I'd go with whatever is cheaper if price is an issue for you.
Doesn't hurt to get your hands on both at a store and get whichever one feels more natural to pull up to your shoulder too, but given the long waits at gun stores I've been hearing about lately since the AW ban talks started...Comment

It's really easy to put aftermarket parts on the Mossy too. Good advice above regarding getting one with a barrel that you can put chokes in. I bought a Mossberg 500 with a 28" vent rib barrel, but it had a fixed modified choke. I ended up pretty quickly selling that barrel to buy one that was threaded. It will give you much more flexibility if you decide to shoot trap, skeet or sporting clays.Comment

Remington 870. Parts interchangeability, different barrel lengths, and over 10,000,000 units made. I love my 870s. The safety is also in a far better and easier to use position than that of the Mossberg in my opinion.

I don't think it's nice,...you laughing.
You see, my mule don't like people laughing.
He gets the crazy idea you're laughing at him.
Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to,
I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.Comment

You'll be happy with the 870. Very easy to find extra barrels as well, if you want to switch for home defense, skeet, field use, etc.Comment

I have a Mossberg 500 and a Remington 870. They are both great shotguns, but I prefer the 870. The 870 feels more solid. The 500 has a little more of a flimsy feeling, but it is still a great shotgun.
If I had to choose, go with the 870!!
