Mossberg 500 Silver

Hi folks, Looking for an HD gun and wouldn't mind shooting clays too. I'm familiar with pistols, but don't know much about shotguns.

Right now, Big Five has a deal for $320 for a Mossberg 500 "Silver" with an 18.5 inch and 20 inch barrel. Is this a good deal? Thanks for your advice.

It's a good deal, but are you sure its a 20" barrel and not a 26 or 28" barrel?

Prices on firearms are only going to keep going up.. Buy them now if you really want them.. And that's a good shotgun btw.. I have that and a 870.

The safe answer is 00 Buckshot, but you'll get some argument.

Some will suggest that Birdshot is adequate and will protect from over-penetration. But it's reliability in stopping a threat is not as great as Buckshot.

I own the same shotgun and love it. Make sure you try it before you use it for HD though. I had to send mine back to Mossberg to fix because it wasn't firing reliably. They ended up replacing the bolt and now it's good to go.

00 buckshot is good to go, 0 buck or #1 buckshot is good too. #4 Buckshot is walking the fine line between just enough penetration or under.

currently, i'm using #6 or #7 1/2 birdshot as the first two or three shells in the tube and then everything behind that (including my side saddle) is #4 buck.

my thought process on that is that first two or three shots are going to be rushed, or i'm just waking up from a noise in the house, etc. so those shots may not hit directly on target. i should be a bit more composed after the first couple. as a disclaimer, i do shoot on a regular basis and don't plan on missing on any of my shots and plan on hitting my target(s) every time.
