Choke Questions

I just picked up my Remington 870 Express Magnum. It's got a 20" (I believe) barrel with a choke on it. I pulled the choke out and it says full turkey choke lead pellets only. Do they make chokes that can handle 00 buck? If I take the choke out and shoot slugs will that damage the threads?

Sounds like you've bought a turkey shotgun. Are you a turkey hunter? What do you plan on using your new shotgun for hunting, home defense or just a loud boom stick? You can buy different barrels and chokes for whatever your purpose is.

You can put buck through that extra full, but I would purchase either an improved cylinder or Cylider choke for shooting slugs. If you fired slugs in it, you might damage the gun since you will be sizing those slugs down .040". In regards to a shotgun barrel that is relatively thin, that would be pushing your luck. You'd probably be wise to also get a Modified or Light Modified choke for shooting buck. I wonder if extra full might be too much constriction and might "blow" your buck pattern. Blowing a pattern means it gets inconsistent and may beat up the otherwise round shot.

Do NOT shoot a shotgun without a choke in it.

You can shoot 00 through the full choke no problem, just no steel anything

Slugs are hit or miss, some of the softer lead slugs are ok but its difficult to say which ones are which. A different choke can be had cheaply, a good all around choke would be either improved cylinder or modified and unless youre hunting or shooting trap/skeet formally you wont notice the difference.
