best round for home defense?

You're kidding right? You've just had to use deadly force on an intruder and you're gonna play tough guy, lay down your gun and try to commit an assault on a person who, just a moment before, had you in fear for your life.
Again, you're kidding right? Do you really think an intruder is going to leave their gun at home because they have concerns for your neighbors?? Or if your question is do intruders really use guns, you need to read a paper or watch some news.
I get what you are thinking. But I guess there are many scenarios and it depends on which scenario is being played in your head. The OP did ask the original question for an apartment scenario. I'm just not picturing Schwarzeneggar or professional killers coming into apartment #3B....more like amateur thieves looking for a quick score....but I guess it could happen.
Anyway...I've seen the Quinn video of birdshot before, in a close situation, and it looks like it does well while still limiting collateral damage, which was the original question. Limiting collateral damage is also a part of being the correct tool in this apartment scenario.Join Active Junky for online rebates....$10 to both you and me!

^ i know glaser safety slugs came out in the 80's and were super expensive, have read some think highly of them and other reviews say they are crap...
so my question is did anyone try and make a better more effective version since then ?
I am kinda getting back in to firearms due to recent activity by the left and just wanted to get some opinions rather than start another thread i thought i would ask here ?Comment

people that think you need 00 buck for home defense are the same ones who think they need a super-whizzbang ultra-mag to kill 90lb deer. if you're trying to shoot it through a car or something, sure, otherwise, you'll be chasing that thing for miles when a guy with a 30-30 will drop it right there. this is right up there with lifting your crew-cab longbed truck 24", with 44" tires, and it'll never see dirt. nevermind that you're 5'4" and need a ladder to get it. people that really need to feel badass, usually aren't.Comment

Why would you waste your time giving an attacker a second chance at getting to you or your loved ones by using birdshot. #4 buck for me, I'd rather end up in civil court for a few stray pellets than in the obituary or worse, filing a police report about one of my loved ones.Comment

There are a wide range of options for 12ga ammo, all the way from #8 birdshot to 000 buck. In general, the larger the projectiles are the better they penetrate - both walls and people.
From everything I've seen, 000 tends to be overkill. However, people who are suggesting going with #4 birdshot are too likely to fail to incapacitate the attacker.
Somewhere around #4 buckshot seems like a reasonable compromise to me, but I know that it's still going to take a significant number of walls to stop it. Sadly, there's no perfect round that'll consistently stop someone, and yet not penetrate a wall.
edit: and if you insist on using birdshot... at least use something like BB. Still far from perfect, but penetration is adequate at inside the house distances.Last edited by Junkie; 01-24-2013, 12:17 AM.Originally posted by CSACANNONEERA real live woman is more expensive than a fleshlight. How many cases of birdshot can you fit in your Prius?Comment

Has anyone tried asking the person: "would you rather get shot with 00 buck or birdshot???" I think I would turn around from that persons home if I were breaking and entering...Comment

i prefer using ammo that LEOs use.
having said that, i typically prefer Federal Premium JHP for my Glock. i currently have some Winchester PDX1 since i couldn't find any Federals at Wally World.
most LEOs use 00 buck, that i'm aware of, however, i've heard that a better preference is #1 buck. i prefer using #4 buck, to be honest.
the way i see it (and i'm sure others may very well agree here) is that if LEOs use it and have little to no issues, there less of a chance that there will be legal backlash if you're doing it right. LEOs also have some #7 1/2 bird as well, but that's not used on humans. that's used on rabid animals and the like. i wonder why.Comment
