    28 gauge?

So I have a bit of a dilemma. I recently inherited A LOT of 28 gauge ammo as well as everything I need to reload them. I have a couple 12 gauges, a 20 gauge and even a .410. My question is does anyone have a 28 gauge? If so, do you like it, hate it? Any opinions would be great. I am trying to decide if its worth it to buy a 28 gauge shotgun or sell all the ammo and reloading stuff. Any and all opinions are apreciated!

    I have a 28 g SxS and have a tube set o/u with 28 g tube.

For the most part I exclusively shoot 28 g for skeet. I shoot a couple hundred rounds of 28 g a month. The reason I use it is
    1. Cheaper to reload than 12 or 20 gauge. Use less powder and Shot.
    2. less recoil than 12/20 g
    3. Almost the same as shooting 12/20 gauge on the skeet field.

just to let you know you're on a gold mine. A box of 28 g runs about $10 a box. You'll come out pretty good if you decide to sell the stuff. I'll be interested is you decide to sell any of it.

      Probably the best overall gauge.

I own numerous 28ga guns and hunt/shoot sporting clays, skeet and even trap with them. The right load/shot will get you results. 3/4oz or 1oz loads are easy duplicate factory specs and even a little hotter:-) You need to be careful though, 28ga runs high pressures and if your reloads are used in say a tubed O/U you run the risk of cracking the tube or I've seen where the frame as actually stretched.

28ga ammo just happens to be the most expensive due to not many purchase factory ammo vs loading.

You can't go wrong with a nice 28ga Rem 1100 or a nice Rizzini O/U. Light weight and easy handle, and the best part, no recoil!

Thank you so much for the info. I have shot a fair amount of trap and skeet but never really noticed anyone shooting this stuff. The one thing I did read on the internet about it was about the lighter recoil. I looked at some of the o/u shotguns out there. They are very nice looking and I may end up buying one. If I don't and decide to sell I will be sure to contact you. Thank you again!

Any idea how much the Rizzini O/U's run? I have had a couple of the 1100's in 12 guage and liked them both very much. So would the 1100 not run into the same problem with cracking or stretching as an O/U would?

Rizzni's vary in price from the mid-$1500 to what ever you want to pay for a high end one.

Another possible O/U that's really nice is the Ruger Red Label. Light weight and fairly reliable.

When using a 12ga with sub gauge tubes is when you need to be careful when loading "hot" 28ga ammo. Buying a semi-auto or SxS or O/U chambered in 28ga you won't have the same "stretch" issue that may come up with a 12ga frame tubed to 28ga. You can't sub gauge tube a semi-auto to smaller gauge, only a SxS or O/U.

I have several Perazzi's in different configurations with sub-gauge tubes and dedicated 28ga O/U. An MX-28 is about the nicest 28ga on the market. It's one of those things, you get what you pay for... Or as I like to say, buy quality, cry once:-)

There are many 28ga's that will fit your needs. They are not as abundant as 12ga or 20ga, but there out there. I don't see many on CalGuns, you might to try Shotgunworld.com or trapshooters.com.

Pm me if you need any additional info. I maybe able to help you find a nice 28ga field gun.

Quality 28 ga o/u's command higher prices. I was lucky to find an 1100 skeet T at a good price. Chasing the spent hulls all over the field is quite a chore though.

Parcours - What's your typical reload data for 28 g? I'm curious what "hot" reloads you've used.

I just used grabbed data from Alliant website for my reloads. They've shot great.

Well spent hulls I have plenty of. I inherited all this stuff from my wife's grandfather who was an avid trap and skeet guy. His guns all went to my wife's uncle who has no interest in reloading. lol

I've had a Ruger Red Label 28 ga O/U since they brought them out, a 28" barreled gun with pistol grip stock. For quail and chukars and cottontails, it's as good as they get. Unfortunately the price is going up since Ruger discontinued double shotguns. My second choice would be a Beretta 686.

At this point I am thinking I will start with something mid-range like the 1100 or red label just to see if I even like the round. The Rizzni's sound like absolutely amazing weapons, but may be a bit much just to satisfy my curiosity about this gauge. lol.

I will check the two websites you listed and if nothing promising turns up I will send you a PM to see if you have any further suggestions. Thanks again!

I have some data from years back with 700X, Green Dot and even Red Dot that got me 1300fps+ with a 1oz load. It's getting harder to find 1oz 28ga wads, but there out there.

Not a good idea to run the pressures listed (12500 to 13700psi) I used these loads in an older 1100 and boy let me tell you, it got out there.

You can still find this data in older reloading manuals and as you can imagine, with pressures like that the powder company's stopped publishing them.

I'm currently loading Universal Clays, 3/4oz in an STS or AA hull for skeet and sporting clays, and they work just fine. They chrono at ~ 1200fps.

I have quite a few Winchester field 1oz loads (factory) that chrono at 1350fps, those really pack a wallop.

I can't think of a nicer gun that a LW 1100 in 28ga. You can find them for $600-1000 once in a while.

Except maybe... A nice Benelli Legacy will probably run at least twice that much.

Stoeger Uplander SxS comes in a 28ga.

                            Stoeger Condor O/U comes in a 28ga

Mossberg also has some O/U and SxS options for a decent price. I have a Mossberg 20ga SxS that I love shooting.
