Question about chokes vs flightcontrol/versatite wads

I'm very new to shotguns so I'm hoping someone can shed some light for me. From what I understand the wad is what keeps the pellets in a some what tight pattern the moment they leave the barrel. From the videos I've seen the Federal flight control wads are designed to fly with the pellets longer in order to maintain a tighter pattern.

If this is the case then how do chokes work? If the pellets travel with the wad through the barrel, and don't disperse until after they leave the barrel, I don't t see how a choke improves/tightens a pattern.

    Should answer your question.
Bounce a ball in Football that's a fumble. Baseball, no bouncing at all. Bounce a ball in Hockey, well that's a mandatory drug test right there...
