Just saw a video on youtube about cut shells. Turns a regular shotgun shell into a slug. Not sure I would ever really want to do this, but might come in handy sometime when I have no other ammo options. Anyone tried this with success?

they are acutally fun to hit stuff with...not very accurate past 25 yards and super easy to make, however i prefer to make wax slugs -
A lot of people do it.. though I don't know how consistent it is. I'd imagine if you cut slightly different between each shell you could end up with widely different performance throughout a batch. In other wordsis exactly right. Not sure I would ever really want to do this, but might come in handy sometime when I have no other ammo options."Everybody is a genius. We did this as teenagers 30+ years ago, my friends dad showed us how. Makes nice holes in the sides of old junk cars. I remember my friends dad always saying that should not try them unless you can fit a dime in the end of your barrel. I call them red neck slugs now.Wanted: Spent Berdan primed Yugo 7.62x39 & 7.5x55 GP11 Swiss brassComment

I've shot a few, they are fun, cheap, and can really put the hurtin on a pumpkin. Last time I shot one, the hull got lodged in the barrel
Couldn't shoot it anymore that day. Had to take it home and peel it off the inside of the barrel. (it was too stuck for a cleaning rod to knock out)Comment

Cut shells are just like everything else when it comes to shooting, you have to use common sense. Obviously you wouldn't want to shoot a cut shell out of a barrel with a full choke or use a 3 1/2" high base shell to make one. I've shot probably 50 through my 11-87 with an improved cylinder choke and nothing has happened.Originally posted by mike415stonePersonnel insults, it's down to that low a level. Even through a cylinder choke, I wouldn't shoot a cut shell. The diameter of the shell is far greater than the diameter of the barrel. Try sticking a shell through the muzzle end... you can't. That said, the shell is plastic and will probably compress.
If you want to shoot cheap slugs, look into wax slugs.Last edited by r1ghtw1ng; 12-07-2012, 11:21 AM.Comment

It's simple to open a shell and melt the lead shot into a simple mold to make a slug(s). Much more accurate and lethal than a cut-shell. Backwoods boys have been doing it for 100+ years.Comment

Guys, they have been doing this for over a century. It is a way to make slugs when you don't have access to slugs. It was really popular in the back woods during the depression in the 1930s. Is it safe? Mostly. Is it a good idea? Probably not. It is one of those things that is useful to know, but not all that useful to do except in emergencies. And truthfully, I think the wax slug concept works better. People tend to get much more reliable results out of that. Without the increased chance of plugging up your barrel with a chunk of torn shell casing.
