Which slugs if any would be good for my gun?

    Hi,

I have a mossberg 590a1 with a 20" barrel and I believe it's a cylinder bore barrel? Sorry I'm new to the mechanics of these guns because its my first one. Its a smooth barrel and I've heard different things about the effectiveness of certain rounds through certain barrels. For example, a rifled barrel doesn't shoot buckshot very well? Will my barrel shoot slugs ok? Also aren't there two different kinds of slugs? Please help clarify this for me! Much appreciated

Remington Slugger is my go to slug for accuracy.

Another noob question, what is a choke? Lol. Is it an aftermarket addition? Not sure how I can tell if mine has one and/or what kinds there are available.

It's a tube that screws into the end of a shotgun barrel. It "chokes" the barrel diameter down. The smaller the diameter of the choke, the tighter your shot will pattern.

If your gun is a cylinder bore, that means there is no choke. You can have your barrel threaded to accept a choke. Barrels can also come with permanent chokes, this is common for the 28" mossberg 500 barrel

A choke is where the interior diameter of a shotgun barrel gets smaller at the muzzle, to force the shot into a tighter bunch translating into smaller groupings of pellets. Some are built into the barrel, and some screw in and are interchangeable.
I would look up the exact model of shotgun you have to find if the barrel has a choke, I guess you could slug the barrel but there is probably a faster way than that. It might even be written somewhere on your barrel / gun.

Open choke is smooth with the rest of the barrel, full choke is maximum constriction of a couple millimeters in diameter. In between are modified, improved ext. Search for exact order its probably on Wikipedia.

I use the sluggers alot for pratice at the range they are ok priced at wallmart 15 for 10$ my indoor range only goes to 25 and they work great to that distance.

Pretty much any rifled slug will be fine.

Sabot , not unless you have a rifled barrel.
