    refinishing a Mossberg 500

Anyone have any suggestions on how to get a beat up Mossberg receiver looking like new again? I have considered Duracoat but have hears that certain gun cleaners like "gun scrubber" have a tendency to eat it up. I want to get as close to original as possible. The receiver is aluminum and the finish is factory glossy black.

If you want a factory look, I would talk local anodizer's in your area.

I think if you go a different type of coating then do the whole gun for a complete look. Duracoat - Parker - ??????
PLEASE WEAR EYE PROTECT & PROTECTIVE GEAR IN SHOP!!!!!! You can order another part from from manufacturer, but you can't order another finger or eye from your mother & father.

Anodizing? is that what gives it that glossy black finish? If so, thats what I want. I have no idea who to talk to about that..would a local gunsmith be able to help me anodize it?

How about powder-coating the receiver? Anyone know how well powder coating holds up to cleaning solvents?

Well, if anodizing is pretty close to what is from the factory and its durable enough to stand up to harsh cleaning solvents, then thats what I want. I would love to have it parkerized but I dont think you can parkerize aluminum.

I am spoiled, because I live Long Beach CA, there are plators - anozdizers - machine shops all around the city. You can find them on the net and phone books. They can offer a wide range of finishes - but keep to the small shops or get your gun-smith to farm the job out. Most Gun-smiths do not plate or anodize.

Do your own voodoo paste anodize-ing your self. I think an aluminum plate was put on a old style coffee pot as a lid and then the hard shell stain could not be removed. Maybe mix coco - coffee - tobacco - a little charcole - Tapatio hot sauce and grind it together. Then either 1 Boil the mess in a thickesh stew with the prepped (plolished clean??) (sand blasted??)reciever (In your wife best pot) for 2 hours. Clean and polish. or 2 Apply wet water paste to reciever and take out side, then flame like you do a lemon menrage pie top (with a PROPAIN torch) - do not get super hot aluminum melts at a low temp. May be heat then spray with water and repeat the three or four times.

The voodoo may give a wild pattern if you do not grind tobacco and mix it with ground coffee and powered coco. Tobacco is sold in Cambobian and Vietcong stores in the religious section - 89cents for 8oz and shredded. Egg shells smashed up would would get you surfur and a host of other goodies.

Al most forgot - prep reciever - paste receiver pour some water or ATF or olive oil and tightly wrapp in Leather (If from El Norte) - tightly tin foil (If some the suburbs) - Banana leaves (If from The Jungle) sold in Pilipino and Southern Mexican Stores. Wrapp tightly and very wet with water or ATF or olive oil or hot sauce and BARBA Q on mediun heat for 3 hours and make sure there is a lot of smoke (do not beath the smoke if you use ATF) If using hot sauce I would suggest a thickesh one. Tabasco does have a lot of vinergar and alkalin hot though --- I will have to think about that.

If want to stay married or do not want your neibors to fear you or want an even gloss black finnish take it to a professional.

Problem with anodizers is they will have a minimum charge no matter how small the part. It may not be worth it. Try here. http://techplate.com/tpeprice.htm Or you can try moly coating it or find someone that will.

mossberg will replace recievers , i forget what the cost is( no dros required cause you send them the old one and they replace it) but i think its worh it to have a spare beater gun kicking around. id buy a whole new gun. then either sell off the old one or keep it for parts or whatever. old beat up mossbergs make nice trunk guns.

Not sure, maybe. I'm on several boards with the same name and have been around since the beginning. My memory sucks when it comes to remembering people and names anyway! Show me a gun and it's model number and it's permanently etched in my memory for life, but a face and a name, no way.
