Newbie (Questions about remington 870) Recoil + Target

    Hi guys,
I have found this forum very useful so far and everyone seems to be very knowledgable here.
I am newbie (admitting - guilty as charged) and have invested in Remington 870.
Today I had a session at indoor range 15 yards and I was able to acheive this.

Shot 20 rounds of 12 gauge

    Two question:
    1. Any feedback you guys can provide about how I am doing in terms of hitting target will be helpful.
    2. Any feedback you guys can provide to reduce the recoil? my shoulder is pretty bruised.
I have seen # of stock handle replacement things but none that has good reviews. Has anyone been able to find a handle that absorbs decent amount of push back?

Still learning how to get pics to show up on the post here so here is the link to the target once I was done with it.

Put the stock tight up against your shoulder for help on recoil.

And as far as 15 yard shotgun shooting you should NEVER misss.

    Have fun !

The shots look fine to me. There are many recoil reducing options on the market, but since you're new, I don't suggest spending hundreds of dollars on accessories you're not sure if you'll like. Get it in the pocket of your shoulder, try "stretching" the gun out (pull back with your trigger hand, push forward with your pump hand), shoot it some more, try getting used to it a little, and if all of that fails, maybe replace your stock's pad with a Limbsaver pad.

pull your arm closer and tighter up against your body and press the butt of the shotgun into your shoulder pocket like mrkam suggested. Make sure you don't have your trigger hand / elbow sticking out like a chicken wing. Lean into the shot a bit. That seems to work for me. If you shoot buckshot you are probably always going to feel it a bit on a pump but you'll get used to it over time as you improve your skills.

Definitely get a limbsaver recoil pad or a supercell pad. I can get through a few clay games, ~100 rounds, with the supercell pad with no problems and no bruised shoulder.

Thank you all for your feedback.
            1. Pulling arm back technique sounds good.. I'll try that.
            2. I shot with Birdshot 12g .. Not even ready for buckshot just yet.
            3. I'll definitely try to shoot a few more rounds before I spend any money on fancy pads and limbsavers.
I have heard that limbsaver helps with some of the recoil though.. anyone has any experience with that?

Your 870 came with a recoil pad from the factory, right? Once you get your technique right, you will be fine. I've put several hundred in a weekend through mine and didn't bruise at all. If I haven't shot in a while, I will get a little sore, but that's about it. Best advice I can give you...don't be afraid of the gun. If you try to hold it away from your shoulder to soften the recoil, it WILL hurt you. What area are you in?

Upload & store pic's on Photobucket.

For the 870. As stated, get it into the pocket of your shoulder. Then, lean into it a little (body weight on balls of feet). And, as mentioned, upgrade the recoil pad. If these 2 items don't help, you may need to have the stock adjusted, so that your gun 'fits' you.

It will come naturally, I had a really hard time my first range session. When I went back It didn't hurt or shake me up at all. You just need to push through the first part.
