Help with Rem 870

Hello fellow CalGunners! At Angeles this morning, having some intermittent problems with my Remington 870 Express Magnum.

Check out the attached pictures.

This round seated fine, and fired fine, then failed to eject. The action was locked forward, and would not budge.

When it finally gave, I saw the ejector tore the lip of the shell back.

I brought it home and used a dowel to push the spent shell out.

The action has gotten locked forward a few times, and I thought it was a lubrication issue, but it doesn't seem to be that. This has happened with various target/clay load type ammo.

Anyone have this issue before? Resolution?

Take some 000 wool,cleaning rod & a drill clean up the chamber.

I found my 870 is a little tighter than my other shotguns and CHEAP WalMart type bird shot did has you described often.. When I use better ammo the problem disappeared.

Same thing happened to me just the other day, shooting steel base Winchester target loads in a fairly new Police Magnum.

Already got some steel wool, just need some dowel and I'm going to hit the chamber to see if it remedies my extraction issues.

I've found that using those bulk pack shot shells will almost have a problem fitting in the barrel. Im thinking its stacked on each other to long in the boxes that maybe it causes the shells to bulge a little. I have pre-fit a few of my shotshells from a bulk pack in the barrel of my 870 and there was a few that had a very tight fit from the others.

No real experience, but I've heard that Express chambers can be rough.

I just picked up a used 870 20ga Wingmaster, and 20ga Estate SuperSport Target Shotshells work just fine.

Mine had the same problem with winchester bulk ammo from Walmart. Federal ammo worked well. I polished the chamber and it works fine now.

Probably not the case. The brass at the base of the shell is tight to the receiver. Get some 000 steel wool, a dowl, and an electric drill and some light oil. Wrap the wool around the dowl and tape it in place at the bottom. spray some oil in the chamber and run the steel wool in and out until the out side of chamber feels quite hot. Do this several times. Clean the barrel good and shoot it. If this does not cure the problem, do it again. 3 times for me!

Is this thread about that at some point a shotguns' CHAMBER needs to be cleaned to insure reliable extraction regardless of brand of ammo?

What would the interweb say--nah bra shoot it till it melts lol!

What would your mom say. Of course you need to wash behind your ears otherwise ear wax spiders lay eggs back there and the young tunnel into the brain stem through the neck causing logical mental disruptions that would lead a shotgunner to believe that a fte, ftc, and/or ftf were caused not by laziness but by cheap ammo or bad engineering.

Its a common problem with the 870s mine does it from time to time, I just put a chamber brush on my drill and ran it for a few seconds and it cleaned it up nicely. Now I do it every few cleanings or so.

I have seen this on several occasions and it is a shame. Who would have thought that an arms maker like Remington would sell guns that need to be cleaned up or DE-burred before they are reliable? What if this happened in a home defense or personal defense situation? I've seen first hand how "jammed" these rounds can be and until you can ram something down there barrel to clear the shell you basically have a $350 club. I understand that there is a simple fix for this but this is absolutely unacceptable. The more I read of this "phenomenon" the madder I get. It's not the ammo it's the gun. I love the 870 for the most part but Remington needs to make some changes to fix this. Most of the malfunctions have been with the express model but now I have read at least two complaints on the 870P doing the same thing. This is no good.
