Can I use any kind of 12 gauge shot in my Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag? I was thinking about buying a rifled barrel for it. If I do, can I shot buckshot through a rifled barrel?

Yes you can use any shot through an Mosberg 835. It is generally advised to not shoot any steel shot larger then BB through a full choke or tighter( such as a turkey choke). Lead and plated lead is used through them all the time for coyotes up to and including 00 buck. Also don't shoot a rifled slug (one meant to be used in smooth bore barrels, also called a forester) through a choke tighter then modified. Again it will work more than once but will be rough on that choke tube and threads.

Yes you can shoot buckshot throrough a rifled barrel but its most likely going to pattern horribly and there is no reason to do it. A rifled barrel is designed to shoot saboted slugs for big game. In some guns they improve accuracy and grouping quite alot over the forester slugs mentioned above.

Why do you need a rifled barrel, and what possible reason could you have to shoot buck shot through it except as a last ditch, oh **** moment?

I bought that gun a long time ago (15 yrs) and I have use it a few times over the last few years to shoot skeet. I was thinking of buying some 00 buckshot for home defense, but I think I am better off just buying a short open barell pump shotgun like the police use and load it up with some buckshot for home defense.

I believe with the 835's you can't shoot slugs out of them cause they're over bored, unless you get a rifled barrel. Barrel diameter on the non-rifled barrels is like a 10 gauge.

You are not supposed to shoot slugs through these shotguns, but some have done it with no issues. I would assume avoiding sabots would be common sense either way.

I have never tried (and don't intend to) with mine.
