    Different types of load

Hey, guys. I just picked up my first gun (mossberg 590A1) and need to stock up on ammo. I am pretty clueless on shotgun shells and have no idea what is more powerful/less powerful except for birdshot compared to buckshot so if you could help me out that would be great. Also, what's the best overall round for home defense and what's the strongest overall round? Thanks!

Thanks that helps a lot with the shot comparisons but what does the oz. mean? The higher the ounce the more gunpowder?

X oz. is the weight of the shot load, NOT the gunpowder. Personally, for home defense I use Federal Flitecontrol buckshot, copper plated 00 buckshot with plastic buffer and a special wad that makes the buckshot stay on a man-size target out to 50 yards. In home-defense ranges it basically acts like a slug that shatters apart inside the target rather than overpenetrating. If your aim's right, the target WILL be stopped. Low recoil makes it a breeze to shoot, it's gentler than target loads.

The only ammo I use is 1600FPS WinX Slugs (j/k)

I prefer 00 for HD and utilize both Win Rangers & Fed LE Tac rounds in the “Low Recoil” variety but I shoot just about everything through my 870.

Careful, Shotguns tend to get addicting.

I looked at that ammo from discount ammo and the shipping was more expensive than the entire order! (I ordered x4 5 round boxes)

I used to have Prianna Rounds years ago. They were #1 Buck with carpet tacks mixed in. I can't find them anymore.

Guess you need a bit more than that. FWIW, Turner's sells that ammo under Federal Personal Defense for around $8 a box.
