If I buy a semiauto shotgun, can I just have a pistol grip on with no stock? In other words, is it legal to buy a semiauto shotgun and remove the stock and put a pistol grip on it instead (with no stock)?

Semiauto shotgun legality question

Shotgun should have min barrel length of 18" or greater. The firearm should also be min. 26" in overall length.
In CA, shotguns CANNOT have revolving cylinder magazines (semiauto or manual/pump).
In CA, semiauto shotguns cannot have detachable magazines.
In CA, semiauto shotguns cannot simultaneously have BOTH a folding/ telescoping stock AND a pistol grip. (Either item separately is OK.).

In CA for it to be a 'shotgun' it has to be shoulder fired. (the code is quite plain on this)
If it has no stock, it is not shoulder fired, if it is not shoulder fired it is not a shotgun, if it is not a shotgun it Can't be an AW.
my 2 cents.
All federal limitations still apply however.Comment

Generally, semi-auto shotguns feature a recoil spring tube projecting from the rear of the receiver, so you will not find a pistol grip only semi-auto shotgun. Sage used to hack up Remington 1100s to move the recoil spring up front, but you don't see many of these around.Lucy at www.mesatactical.comComment

If you can get it to work, as long as the barrel is greater than 18" and the overall length is greater than 26", you are legal.
CA law also defines a Short Barrel Shotgun as...
Any firearm that fires a shotgun shell that has a barrel length less than 18" and an overall length less than 26".
CA Penal Code 12020
(c)(1) As used in this section, a "short-barreled shotgun" means any of the following:
(A) A firearm which is designed or redesigned to fire a fixed shotgun shell and having a barrel or barrels of less than 18 inches in length.
(B) A firearm which has an overall length of less than 26 inches and which is designed or redesigned to fire a fixed shotgun shell.
(C) Any weapon made from a shotgun (whether by alteration, modification, or otherwise) if that weapon, as modified, has an overall length of less than 26 inches or a barrel or barrels of less than 18 inches in length.
(D) Any device which may be readily restored to fire a fixed shotgun shell which, when so restored, is a device defined in subparagraphs (A) to (C) inclusive.
(E) Any part, or combination of parts, designed and intended to convert a device into a device defined in subparagraphs (A) to (C) inclusive, or any combination of parts from which a device defined in subparagraphs (A) to (C), inclusive, can be readily assembled if those parts are in the possession or under the control of the same person.Last edited by Quiet; 02-26-2008, 1:09 PM.sigpic
