    Mossberg 500 Ghost Ring Thoughts

So I recently bought a Mossberg 500 and I'm considering getting the Ghost Ring sights. My wife is going to get a side by side. She wants to shoot some clay and my hope is that my pump can be reliable enough to join in some of that. I'd rather not use her 28 gauge if at all possible.

Do any of you shotgun experts have some advice? I'm thinking I go with the sights, break a few clays and let the wife win.

What barrel length is your 500 and what is the intended use?

I've gone through a bunch of tactical shotgun courses and taught several as well. Sights are nice for slugs....BUT in all reality chances are rather slim that you will ever swap a round of buck for a slug and use your sights for a "surgical shot".

The shotgun is a niche weapon - deadly efficient within its niche, but rather inefficient outside of that envelope. In a dynamic environment, with lots of fast movement and conditions that deny a steady aim, shotguns rule. I know a cop who took down a violent perp with a 12ga while running after him - he did not stop to fire the shot and got about half the pellets into him.

If you want to project force at longer distances with any measure of precision a carbine is much more efficient. My personal preference is either a Saiga or lever-action over the shotgun for those applications.

As far as my shotguns go, I have a Winchester 1300 with Surefire Forearm and a Benelli M2 tactical in factory configuration. The latter has sights, which come in somewhat handy as long as I'm not shooting on the move. In tactical settings, getting off the X is my first priority, shooting the second. Consequently, I do not use a whole of sights there.

To really enhance the capabilities of your Mossberg, you may want to look at a red dot sight such as an RMR or FastFire (the first for a combat gun, the FF3 is nowhere near as sturdy). You do not have to focus on your sights and getting your target inside the "screen of death" will get pellets into your adversary.

      ><

For shooting clays I'd recommend sticking to just the bead.

There are Skeet Clinics offered at the top of the Shotgun Forum. Read through them and try to make it to one. You will get a lot of info and training in just one day.

Rifle sights look cool on a shotgun, but no really needed.
A hi vis front sight is what you need.
