    Pre 1978 870 20g barrels?

I have a 1974 Remington 870 20g that I need a new barrel for. I would prefer it be a tactical style rather than a hunting barrel. Any suggestions?

Good luck, the early 20 ga barrels were built on the larger 12 ga frame.. you may have to get one custom made for you.. there are not a whole lot of spare parts for these guns out there..

Ditto, however, even Luck won't help you as there were no short barrels made for that model. The best hope you have is cut yours down or find another one and have it cut down and threaded for Rem Chokes.

OP, I have the same problem as you, having a large frame 20 ga. 870. I searched around extensively and came up dry, just as JD said. I managed to snag a NIB barrel on Gunbroker and will be having it cut down and the bead remounted on a pedestal. That's about your only choice if you want a "tactical" barrel.
I'm retired. That's right, retired. I don't want to hear about the cop who stopped you today or how you didn't think you should get a ticket. That just makes me grumpy!

Large frame 20's have a serial number prefixed with "X".

Personally, if I wanted a tactical anything, I'd sell the older 20 and get something newer.. it's a shame to cut down a pre-1978 870 - 20.. those things are getting rarer and rarer..
