Look at it like this, anyone who got punched in the shoulder 70 times in a hour is going to be sore. Try the low recoil rounds next time.

Consider ice packs after shooting. Much of the 'damage' comes from bleeding, and ice stops most of that.

IIRC just icing after stops the bleeding and keeps it stopped. Important thing is ice as soon as possible after the injury. Of course with an hour or more time spent shooting you might want to ice during any range breaks.

I shoot lots of low base rounds no issues, but when you get to 00 buck and slug..unless they both are low recoil models then the bruising begins...I have been shooting 870's for the last 27 years and yes a good recoil pad does help a lot...

I didn't know any better lol. I actually didn't think it was that bad. I'm not exactly a lightweight, so the shots didn't blow me back much. I was just concerned about the soreness and big bruise afterwards. I bought a case of 00 high brass at the Crossroads Gun show last weekend and I was itching to try them out! It's a good thing I didn't bring all 250 rounds otherwise the title of this thread would be "Newbie's arm fell off after 250 rounds of 00 buck!"

Thanks for all the info and advice everyone. I have TONS to learn and I'm glad I found this site! I'll get a few boxes of different shots and see how well they work for me. I'm also rethinking my plans for a .45 acp as my first handgun lol

I did the same thing a few weeks ago, but more out of necessity. I picked up my Mossberg 500 and the only range near me that I could shoot it at was a friend's private club and we didn't want to wreck anything there so we picked up some 3" Remington slugs. Needless to say, I bruised my should up a bit but we had a ton of fun. Soon we'll take it out and put some buck shot through it.

Trade in the Mossberg for a Benelli M4. Can shoot all day without pain.

I had 2 3/4 shells. I would imagine 3" would be a lot more kick!

If I had an extra $1700 laying around I'd be all over the M4!

Whats your anatomy like? Maybe doing pushups will help add some flesh. If you wear layers of clothes you can reduce some of the recoil as well. Definitely get a recoil pad too.

I've got a pretty good round figure going lol. I've got some good meat in the area and I'm looking at Limbsaver pads. There's just so many, it's hard to choose which one to get.

pick one and run with it, try shot between the size of 9, 8 ,7 1/2, and 6s
9 is the smalles, 6 is the biggest after that is mostly hunting rounds for duck, pheasant, turkey etc. with shot sizes 5-1 then its T shot, 0000 buck 000buck 00buck 0buck then slugs.

#5 shot and lower is usually "high base" or "high brass" loads which have a higher brass collar and more powder than low base loads that are lower power and generally slower velocities.

#5 shot and larger generally are more expensive than low base loads.

00 and slugs are approx 80-90 cents a round and trap/low base loads are generally $5-8 for 25. not only will you save your shoulder with trap and low base loads but you get more trigger time for a lower cost. hope this helps

I noticed that European buckshot is stronger than American. The Italian Nobel Sport Law Enforcement Buck is stroong and the Spanish Rio Royal Buck is even stronger! Winchester's loads seem to be a little lighter and you might want to consider 2 inch buck shells made by Aguila http://www.northwestshootersupply.co...s20rounds.aspx not only will they have lighter recoil but you should be able to fit an extra shell or two in your feed tube! (assuming you can get them to function reliably)

Edit: Says on northwest shooter supply that they work with the Mossberg 500 so looks like you're good to go!

Here's some that I bought a while back but I don't think you can find them for sale anywhere anymore.
