Should I be scared of the 930 spx?

As a shotgun newbie, I'm trying to make a decision on what to get that makes sense. I have a Nova 12ga for HD, but have realized the need for ambi controls as I'm a lefty. That being said, I've been looking mostly at Mossbergs, and the 500, 590 and 930. I like the idea of an autoloader, but have read a lot of negative reports on the 930 (sight issues, feeding issues, etc). I've also read about people with zero issues.

Should I be concerned about buying a 930 spx? Are the older ones something I should steer away from? new ones too? Am I only getting negative info as only negative issues are posted? How do I sort through this info in a nonbiased way?

    Thanks all!

You are probably noticing more negative info because that is what people like to post. People rarely post to say "I'm happy"...They post to say "This doesn't seem to be working correctly...". Given the number of 930spx owners, and the limited number of negative posts, I'd infer that many/most are likely happy with their 930spx.

That being said, it does work well if you use decent shells, break it in properly, and lube it properly.

    Mine is a newer model.

      Fresno,

thanks for the info. I tend to agree with you, but I rarely see negative reports for the 870/590/500 in a way that is reported re: the 930spx. I understand there are more potential issues inherent with an autoloader, but is the 930 really something to avoid?

Nope. Just get one. Figure out how it likes to run (dryer for mine) and keep it clean.
        Happy shooting.

I've shot one, no feeding issues, was a blast. I only wish I could find a non SPX model with wood furniture for a decent price.

Mine has run well. Had a problem with the mag ext., Mossbrg took care of the problem.

I own a 930 JM PRO. The only thing I would be scard of would be, being on the wrong end of this beast. Runs like a champ.

Benelli should switch the safety to the other side for the cost of shipping the trigger housing to them.

All semis ever made will have some negative feedback

Rem 1100- charging handle flies off
Benelli m1- wont run low power bird ammo- wont run with a light attached
Mossberg 930- malfunctions with cheap ammo
Franchi- too hard to clean the gas system and stops running
Saiga- the mag locks stink- mags are awkward- cant switch between bird, buck and slug without changing gas setting

Same types of complaints occur with pumps as well

All are good guns- all are good guns with proper cleaning, maint and ammo

If you are using the shotty for home defense, the 930 can serve you well
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

Sorry I can't add much, except to say that I shot a friend's one day and it was sweet!

This is exactly right and is due to human nature. We thrive on drama, and there is no drama in "it just works", which is why you hardly ever see such posts.

I shot one (which was brand new) on light clay loads and neither of us had a single failure. That said, I do NOT recommend an earlier version unless you've tried it out. The latest version is good because of what they learned on the earlier versions... enough said.

so wait - everything on the internet isn't true?

Any place I can get a less biased review? THR? any other sites? Most seem to like it, but when I look at forums, there are many with probs, even at the mossberg site?

There are always complaints... the real question is, "out of how many?" Unfortunately we'll never know that... probably tens of thousands.

The majority of negative reviews came from early production issues that have since been resolved by Mossberg. The 930 is good to go

Take a look at FN's SLP it's a little more $ but no issues either.
