    Mossberg 500 refinishing

I have a pretty beat up Mossberg 500 shotgun and I wanted to have it refinished. I like to have things as good as the original so I e-mailed Mossberg and asked them if they could take care of me. Well, they said that they cant refinish receivers but they could replace the receiver for $70.00. I know alot of gunsmithing places cant even refinish a receiver for under $100.00 so I feel thats a pretty good deal. I just wondering how it would work here in California, though. The e-mail said to just send it in and they would take care of it. Now, since its a new receiver, would it have to be sent to a FFL and then I would have to wait 10 days? Would they use the same serial number so it would still technically be the same gun?

Before you send it to them, ask them about the SN. Also, might I suggest, buying a new one for $200+ from Big5 and using the one you've got as a "canvas" to do a rattle can camo job on. That way you'ld have a duck or turkey gun and a pretty gun for probably about $150 more than just getting a new receiver.

I just called them. They told me that the old one gets "scrapped" and the new one will have a new serial number. I asked him about the 10 day waiting period and going through a FFL if its a new gun. He told me that they will send it back to me directly with paperwork stating that it was a "replacement" receiver. I dont know if that will hold water in regards to the DOJ though. I think $75 is a great price and I will probably take them up on it if I can clear up the legal aspect.

There is no legal aspect...you can/may send a gun to a smith or manufacture for repair/refurbishment and have it shipped directly back to you. The doj is not involved.

I guess what has me a bit concerned is the fact that its a new serial number, which pretty much means its a new firearm.

That issue doesn't matter for unregistered firearms (aka, its not a regged AW or a handgun.)

You can pick them up brand new at Big 5 when they go on sale for pretty cheap. I'm not sure it's worth dumping money into a new receiver, then you'd still have the barrel and stuff to refinish. What about selling it and upgrading to a 590? If you want to dump the money into it you can send it out and have it duracoated.

its sad, but we live in a disposable society. its cheaper to replace things than it is to refurbish them.

i say keep the old one( it works fine, yes?) and just buy a whole new shotgun. that way you have a matching pair with readily available replacement parts for later. or sell off the old beater one and you end up getting your gun replaced with all new parts( not just the reciever) for quite possibly the same price. or at least a very close to same price.

id just rattlecan the old gun and call it a day, but then i like old beater guns.

That Duracoat does sound tempting. I wonder how the stuff stands up against the original Mossberg finish (whatever that is).

Duracoat is GREAT & really durable. It's a finish designed specifically for firearms. Although it might run you around $150 or so to do it. It cost me around $170 to do my AK clone. Contact Drew at http://www.armoryairbrush.com/ for a quote. Calguns members get 10% off. There are also other places that do it too, just do a search as some have been posted here before. But I can't recall who.
