Mossberg 930 bolt/shell release?

I have a Mossberg 930 and pressing the bolt release releases all of the shells in the mag tube into the action, jamming up the lifter. If you have a thumb in there you can make sure only one shell comes out at a time, but if your thumb is not there pressing that button jams up the gun. Seemed pretty stupid to me to have a "jam my gun" button, but I assumed that's just how it worked. However, after reading the manual I notice it states:

"While holding the elevator down with your thumb, press the bolt release
(Figure 4). This will release one round from the magazine tube under
spring pressure." (emphasis mine)

So is my 930 broken? To anyone else with a 930, what happens when you press the bolt release button on a closed bolt with rounds in the tube? Does it only release one shell into the action (which will then get loaded if you cycle the bolt) or does it release all of them and jam up?

I just tried this and all of the rounds released and jammed up.

with the lifter pressed up into the chamber, when i hit the button it releases one round.

its how you unload it.

ive done it 20 or 30 times with wallymart loads and with dummy loads and cant get it to do what your saying.

is the gun rightside up, or upside down when your doing it?

if its upside down and your lifter is hanging partway down, it might cause what your saying.

if its right side up, then the lifter should be flush with the reciever and pressing the button should just close the bolt.

does your lifter move freely?

The lifter moves freely. If the gun is right-side up and I press the bolt release with the bolt forward and the lifter at rest, it releases all of the shells into the action. That's about enough room for one whole shell and just a bit of the next shell on the lifter (with the rest of it still in the tube), so the lifter is unable to move.

I can take a picture if it helps.

It seems like the correct design would be to release a single shell at a time when the bolt release is pressed and the bolt is forward. This would let you unload the tube one at a time, and if the release was pressed accidentally (once!) there would be no jam.

ok, so i got it to do what you were talking about last night, i was practicing combat reloads with dummy rounds, and i got it to do it twice, right side up and upside down.

I was using these, i wonder if it has something to do with the weight of the shells?

do you have the JM extended magazine tupe? mine is the 9+1 so im wondering if the spring is so strong its pushing them out past the retainer.

I suppose you could call mossberg and ask?

I hate to bump such an old thread, but did anyone find an answer to this? Its seems absolutely insane that accidentally hitting the bolt release button on a 930 is an instant 'jam my gun now button' by dumping 2 shells onto the elevator.

If I push the elevator into the action when pushing it, it only release one shell.

I'm with you '6489. I've had my 930 DC for about a year and a half. Been to the trap range numerous times and upland bird chasing. Have about 1700 shells thru it and no issues. The bolt release operates as it should. Probably an early 930 problem? Don't know, but, mine runs fine.
