I also have an 870 (a wilson combat one), and I'd take the 590 instead.

My brother has one of the cheap 500s. I shot it once, and every time I racked it back, the inertia would put the safety on. Probably just a loose screw or something of that sort, but it did happen.
The finish, and quality of parts, is much better on the 590s. They use a lot more metal on the 590s than they do on the 500s, and the park finish is nicer than whatever they put on the 500s.
And I have shot clays with my 590, though at a pretty close range (like what you would have with clays thrown by one of the hand throwers). Probably wouldn't do for birds though.
      +1
it is worth the buy and it can withstand abuse. Just depends on what you want for a shotgun. If you want it for mostly home defense and combat effectiveness the 590 wins.

The downside of the Mossbergs is that you can't add any mag extensions like you can with the 870. I have the 500 combo and its a decent gun. I ended up changing the mag tube and barrel. I'm thinking of getting rid of it to buy a dedicated HD shotgun or just keeping it as a trap gun.

I still haven't headed down to Big 5 - figured I'll catch the tail end of the sale tomorrow. The combo seems like the popular winner.

For everyone whose recommended the 870 - show me some place I can waltz in and pick one up for $250. Until then, my consideration will remain with the Mossbergs, period
