Call Fish and Game. They are your best resource for this kind of information. Pretty much the ONLY time you can use buckshot on deer in California is when you are hunting in an area that bullets or slugs are forbidden by law for hunting. Those kinds of areas are few and far between. I checked myself last month because I had a line on a property for hunting, but the owner said buckshot only. I talked with F&G, and they said it was a no-go. Land owner restrictions don't allow you to use buckshot. I had to pass. Also, I believe that where it is legal, only 0 and 00 are allowed.

        Slugs

Do it right..use a slug. They are accurate even in a smooth bore. I like Truballs and the Federals from Walmart. You should not then be looking for your deer unless you miss.

Deer shot with buckshot turn into a bloody mess, and you'll waste a lot of meat.
