I have put more wear and tear on my Rem 870 from moving and storage then from actual shooting. My actual round count around 500. It is not near worn out. I would guess 10000 round plus before things would start wearing.....???.

I read once about a shooter who shot 20k rounds through his 870 and he said it was still working fine. It was one of the older, not newer models if that means anything.

        Keep shooting it!

I've put well over a 1000 rounds through mine which I bought about a year ago. And it was over 20 years old when I bought it. Shows no signs of slowing down.

My grandpa shot 250 rounds a week through his model 12 for 35+ years. It still shoots great but he can't see the dang clays anymore!

Shotguns wear out? In my experience they don't wear out so much as break (usually easily repairable) from abuse or neglect. The Mossbergs I have seen have some extractor parts that are prone to breakage, but can be fixed in the field if you have the part.

The guns you guys are talking about are good for tens of thousands of rounds with just routine care.

I have a Model 12 from 1960 and a Model 42 from 1932, both all original and both used extensively for trap and skeet and both still tight as a drum, even though they are takedown designs. Same with a couple 870's I have owned. Don't even get me started about my O/Us.

Shoot them as often as you want, keep them clean and lubricated and don't worry about wearing them out.

I have put upwards of 3k rounds through my 20ga 870express and it functions flawlessly and continues to get smoother. I know some guys that have probably put 20k through there 1100's and only have minor failures once in a blue moon

Hard to wear one out. No rifling, low pressures, simple mechanisms.

Oil it, and wipe it down once in a while, should be fine for as long as you are kicking.

My moss 500 my dad gave to me (we have estimated) has about 30,000 rounds through it. the only problems I have had are a worn out mag spring and a broken plastic safety switch.... and it still is going strong.

as zfields said, it is hard to wear one out

Got a mossy 835 Ultimag that was neglected (not properly cleaned/oiled) for the first 10 years of it's life. Been putting lots more rounds through it and cleaning/oiling it properly after every trip.

Works great with thousands down the pipe. The thing seems virtually indestructible.

awsome info . i brought this up because i purchased a mossy 88 last month and have put 100 rounds through it ( just 8s down at the trap range ) before i cleaned or lubed it . i know i know . it is indeed a fact that manufacturing grease is not lube and will not act as such . anyway the the bolt had made some pretty un appealing marks in the top of the reciever as well as on the feed and ejection arms . live and learn . so i was i just thought to my self how many can one take even when properly maintaned . i just purchased today a stevens 320 field combo and will be cleaning and lubing it before its maiden voyage . i am interested to see how the stevens does as i am a mossberg man .

I got my 870 in 1969 and it has over 30,000 rounds thru it. No breakages, no issues, still as good as new after 43 years. And I used to go out in snow, rain, freezing rain, with only WD-40 to protect it. The only thing that has shown up, other than dings, is the barrel lug has changed from a blued color to a kinda of bronze color.

The springs certainly will wear out, but the rest of it should last a lifetime and then some.

I have a Winchester 1300 that has about 10k down the pipe... still runs strong, no breakages.
