To Vang Comp or NOT??!!

Looking to get a second shotgun somthing kinda cool and diffrent...do I pick up the mossy 500 breacher or is the Vang Comp 500 worth the extra $200??
Also in the running are the Blackwater 500 and the Gunsight 500.


Looking for advice from people that have actually shot these guns...especially anyone who has shot a Vang Comp'ed 12ga!

If you run standard loads in your shotgun, the Vang Comp will get you an additional 10 yards of 00 buck on a B-27 target.

Federal's FCS 00 buck does the same thing with standard 870 barrels.

The Vang Comp is a mixed blessing. The tighter groups are really nice at times and not to your advantage other times. One advantage of a shotgun with shot is that it is fast. Precision aiming is not required due to the pattern spread. The tighter the pattern, the more carefully you need to aim the gun.

I shoot hostage shots (headshots to the hostage taker) with a standard shotgun and cringe at times when I see a piece of shot hit the hostage. It makes me wish I had a tighter pattern.

I shoot the same thing with my Vang'ed 870 and I cringe when I just miss the hostage taker . . . if only I had a more open pattern it would have been a good shot. So it is a double edged sword.

That said, I really enjoy shooting my Vang Comp and the tight pattern it produces. Have you considered the 590A1?

You want something with a function and CSF (cool stuff factor) get the Vang. You'll recoup some of the investment by shooting standard shot loads.
My 18" 590A1 Vang gives me 30+ yards with S&B buckshot.

the 590a1 looks awsome and totally functional which is what I'm after, but my gun guy has the 500vang comp for $565 an its his last one. I haven't seen the gun yet, but if it has sights I'm gonna buy it ASAP.

The barrel porting is sort of a mixed blessing due to the liability of venting gas going in a direction other than downrange. 12ga recoil really should not be an issue with good technique. As was pointed out, the bore improvements can be a mixed blessing when it comes to the extremely tight patterning.

As an alternative, should you choose not to go VC, you can always run Flite-Control shells when you need a tight shot pattern, or better yet, do a slug change-over.

Half of running a shotgun is knowing how to use the correct ammo for the application that presents itself.

I have a Remington 870 PMAX LE with Vang Comp system. This is my HD go to gun for the simplicity of function, ergonomics (Im a duck hunter) and the Vang Comp system works well with fast follow up shots. I use low recoil LE 00 buck shot so I am able to stay on target if the 1st shot doesn't do its job (like Im going to stop shooting anyway). Im not too worried about pattern spread as everything inside my house is no more than 17yds in any direction. With my pattern tests I would only loose 2-5 pellets in 17yds. I have patterned #4, #7 and #8 shot that I had from dove and duck hunting. The smaller pellets stayed in patterns no more than 8" in that range, however the recoil felt for fast follow up shots was in my opinion too much to place a well aimed shot.

The Vang Comp system is a benefit for HD applications, but you really need to limit to just that. As said before its application and technique that make the shooter, so whichever way you go, buy lots of ammo and get good with using that platform.

Go with Vang, I have been running one since the 90's and it never fails to perform. 00 buck thru #4 buck, the patterns are tighter at distance than any other shotgun I have. It really shines shooting duplex loads. I run a Remington 2/4 duplex for HD.

Hans Vang is the best. I met him many years ago and bought one of his 870 VangComps.

This is one guy who doesn't get enough notice but those people who know him and his products are well served.
