    Real HD Use?

I'm sure this is "one of those threads," but I haven't seen one yet. So I want to know, with all the discussion about flashlights and mixing rounds and strategies...has anyone on this board ever actually been in a home invasion scenario where they used their shotgun or even pistol? Or at least had a close friend or family member in that situation?

I'm not talking about stories in the news, I'm asking because I want to know because I want to get a feeling for how your decision-making was? What did you do? Did you guard your room/family or actively go after the perp? How did the level of adrenaline affect you? Did you make your presence known or did you wait to see if they left or the police arrived? Would you have done something differently?

I know a lot of folks have theories and many are highly trained in home defense, but has any calgunner actually been in this real life situation?

I've been on the wrong end of a firearm twice in my life.

In neither circumstance did the situation present itself in a way where I would have had the upper hand (nor was I armed in those days). If the offender has the upper hand, reasonable compliance is the rule until it really looks deadly.

That said, and I'm sure its different for everyone, but I was surprised how clear headed I was. After all is over, of course, you become a blubbering idiot.

I am equally clear that had I been armed and had the opportunity, I'd have no problem pulling the trigger.

Neither incident was in the home. Both were workplace robberies. No shots were fired.

Wow, glad you're ok. Are these at the same job? Yikes.

In either scenario, beginning exactly as they did with the upper hand going to the offender...Had you been armed, would you have done things the same way you did? I know you said you'd have no problem pulling the trigger if you had the chance, but if it seemed that compliance would allow the situation to end without incident, would you have kept it holstered or made a move anyway, in case they had other ideas regardless of compliance?

I woke up early one afternoon after a nightshift to hear someone in my apartment. I grabbed up the G20 and came out of my bedroom (closed locked door) to find a guy in my kitchen bent down below counter level. I announced myself and told him "if you move an Iota I' am gonna plug plug you" LOL. When He looked up and got the deer in the headlights look while looking down the barrel of my 10mm I realized he was the new repair guy and had entered my premises . I had in place a no entry unless I was home and notified with a 24hour notice due to the fact I worked 12 hour graves at the time.

Could have ended badly as he didn't even knock and I am a pretty heavy sleeper as there are kids constantly playing in front of my apratment while I try and sleep. I was pretty jacked up to be honest but have had some decent training and run IDPA so that helped alot. I would have done everything the same probably although you're not supposed to go looking for the perps I felt fairly confident to do so at the time. Each scenario is differant so you can't throw a blanket strategy of them.

Same job. Mundane job too. It was also almost 30 years ago. Bad guys are different now.

Had I been armed, one situation would likely had ended the same way as being blindsided as we were, there would have been little ability to bring a weapon to bear, especially with the presence of others. This was a resturant robbbery after hours with one of the employees be an accomplice and unlocking the barred rear door.

The second situation may never had occured as it was a lay-in-wait attack and the presence of defensive arms would likely have given us a pass. This was making the night deposit at the bank for the same place. Bank was surrounded by large bushes providing cover. Both around the building and roadside. Subsequent to this event, procedures were changed to require two cars. Second car with stand-off distance and visable shotgun. legal or not, it was supported by the local PD. Note that the bank also removed the offending landscaping. BTW: The whole incident was done in 20 seconds.

That said, change one variable in any situation and you cannot presume the outcome, so really its speculation.

Lastly, these circumstance pale in comparison to what LE and armed forces deal with and I'm not so foolish to believe I'm Rambo. In almost any case where you or your family are not in immediate peril, its best to be compliant or be gone. Defense, while it sounds good, is the least likely scenario and way down on the options list. Remember, you like your life and your blood a lot more than they like theirs. It ain't a fair fight.

People have to be VERY careful how they answer this because there are liability issues involved. You say you would have done something differently that would have not resulted in injury and/or death and you could end up in court being sued...or worse on trial for your freedom or life.

Yes, true...definitely not looking to get anyone in a legal bind or worse so please don't answer if it will. I suppose I intended this question more for those who didn't intervene and regretted it. Though I can't imagine regretting having kept your life and your family's lives secure by waiting it out.

Never had to run into this situation, but I like to think if there is a break in, I would startle the robbers giving me a couple of seconds to do something as I lay naked on the couch petting the Benelli, and scratching my junk.

A girl flashed some $$ on her facebook page and a few hours later she got robbed at her house but she wasnt home so her parents got the end of it....I ran a small forum back in 2004 and I was able to pin point where the IP was at and where it was in which city/city block....If I can do that, perks would be able to do something similar...

As for the OP, I been in 1 that I remember clearly. I woke up 4 in the morning to my dad yelling, took out my pistol and ran to our side door, a man was there aproaching my father but as soon as he saw me with a gun he bugged out and ran into the tall gasses (i mean tall, like chest high). What I did wrong was had it in my gun safe and had a trigger lock on it. Now, it sits on my night stand.
