Go hit gunbroker. You can pick up used shotguns fairly cheaply. If you have your C&R, you can get many of the older ones shipped directly to you. I have picked up decent older pumps for $125-150. And side by sides for the same. A single shot is ok, but as the others have noted, sometimes a follow up shot is needed. If you have a trap range near you that rents guns, I would highly recommend trying out the different models and gauges they have available to see what you like.

Get what your budget allows. There are plenty of used shotguns out there at all prices. A single shot is a good way of teaching to make each shot count, and they are probaby at the lowest price point.

That being said, if you buy something like a Rem 870, it's unlikely you'd have to upgrade later.

Not if you can shoot it well. Even if you get laughed at, who gives a sheet? Those with expensive guns can tend to look down on those with cheap guns but, that's their problem, not yours. A single shot is not ideal but, it does make it more sporting. If you really want to freak people out, go get two muzzleloading single shot shotguns and have some fun.

I rotate my shotguns and frequently use a Winchester Model 37 single shot in 28ga when I go pheasant hunting. Great gun, light, and makes me concentrate. Definitely makes it more challenging.
