    Newbie with a few questions...

I Just purchased my first gun which is a Mossberg 500 and I have a few questions as to getting started.

Is there anything I need to do prior to using my gun as in break in procedure
and also how often and what do I need to clean my gun?

    Thanks

Might be different with the 500 but my 590 right out the box got a spritz of rem oil then it was off to the foothills for some fun. Few hundred shells later and it was just fine. Ran a boresnake through the barrel and re lubed then put it away. Just my .02

As soon as I got it I wiped all the factory oil off and applied Frog Lube. Went to test it at the range and shot 25 rounds without hiccup. Went home, wiped the gunpowder off, cleaned and reapplied the lube.

I would give it a quick cleaning and lube job then go shoot it with a variety of ammo brands. Then bring it back home for another clean/lube job and you should be good to go.

Also it will probably take 100+ rounds to get it "broken in".

Buy your ammo at Wal Mart. Get a 100 round value pack, and you'll be fine.

Noob here too. I'm only two days into my ten day wait for my shotgun.

I got a few boxes of Federal Ultra Clay & Field 12 Gauge, #8 Shot, 1-1/8 Oz, 3dram.

1oz or 1.5 oz of 8's or 7.5's will do the trick.

Stay at 3 drams or under, and your shoulder will be fine.

My first gun was the 500 as well. I didn't do anything more than take it out of the box and put about 25 rounds through it. Although if I knew what I know now I would at least run a bore snake through it. The Mossbergs come from the factory VERY WET so there isnt any need in my opinion to pre lube unless your are completely cleaning it out first.
