    First shotgun

i need input on my first shotgun to buy. I was thinking of getting a 590a1 for my first but i was seeing that the 870, m4 and nova were also some to consider. im looking for reliability more than anything and was going to use it for home defense and range usage and maybe a little bit of hunting if possible. thanks in advance for your input......its appreciated.....

870 period. If you do anything else, you'll regret it.

If you're looking for reliability the 590a1 is an amazing pump action shotgun and I've been very satisfied with mine, reliable as the sun. If you can find an old 870 wingmaster they're as solid as a rock and have excellent fit/ finish. I haven't been too impressed with the newer 870 expresses, fit and finish has really tanked. Had quite a bit of failure to ejects on my buddy's 870 express( and I didn't rack it like a sissy)

M4s are amazing. But semi-autos are totally different beasts, they also run a premium over the pumps and have to deal with 922r compliance.

Novas/Super novas are also excellent pumps and can usually be had for a pretty good deal.

Like I tell everyone. Go out and handle a few. If you've got shooting buddies with different shotguns try them out and buy whatever feels best to you.

        +1 to 590a1, or an older 870.

The 590A1 is a great choice, but IMHO buy the 590SP and save a hundred bucks. Unless you're going to war, the heavy barrel isn't much of an advantage. The A1 has a steel trigger guard but I've never heard of the 590SP trigger guard breaking. Everything else is the same.

Semi-autos have to deal with AW laws, all imported shotguns have to deal with 922(r) compliance.

Mossberg 500 are as reliable as they come, they also have a great after market of parts to make them into what ever you like best! Remington 870 would be my second choice, followed by the Maverick line. If you had said you wanted a hunting gun first that could do other sports Id have put the 870 first. DR

if you EVER want to do anything hunting wise, don't get something thats all tacticool. Get an 870, or a 500 and you can just get a longer barrel later and be done with it.

if you're looking at new shotguns i'd buy anything but an 870, unless you get lucky and get the 1 out of 100 they accidentally made well, but i wouldn't take the chance. you can't lose with a mossberg or maverick, they're not flashy but reliable, smooth and well-built. another to consider is the stevens line of chinese-made, warranteed by savage shotguns. they'll be hard to add junk to, but they work well and are inexpensive. 199 right now at turners. the turkish 870 copies are actually much nicer than a genuine remington. go handle them all and make your decision. or buy a used winchester defender, they are the best.

you can't interchange the barrel of the 590a1 with the other 500 model barrels?
