    Shotgun Maintenance

I have a mossberg 500 and i've been told that these guns work better when dirty ... but I would like to know what is the proper way to clean and oil them. I've shot about 300 rounds through it and haven't done anything to it.

remove barrel and run a solvent soaked patch through it and dry it. continue to do this until clean. use a brush if necessary. dry it down and thinly coat the barrel with lightly soaked patch. then just swab the receiver part with solvent then oil.

mossbergs are pretty tough and can take alot of neglect but id clean it anyway. keeping it dirty will not improve performance. you might get less rattle as the gunk builds up and that might seem like its working better dirty but thats false.

if you keep it for self defense then definately keep it clean. a dirty gun will fail to function more readily than a clean one.

        edit:

id disassemble everything and clean it well. why halfass it?

i meant that for a simple clean. i do full cleaning (total breakdown of parts) after a big shoot which is like 3-5 times a year. If its just an occasional shoot then i just do a quick clean.

Boresnake and a quick wipedown will do the trick. I would not advise detail cleaning, especially in guns with alloy receivers, until necessary. The more you take your gun down, the more wear and tear. If you have an air compressor, just blow the action out and follow up with a good spray lube.

When you do a detail clean, be careful and don't force anything. Use a toothbrush and solvent to clean the trigger group, then blow it dry. Do the same with the bolt and carrier. Lube everything liberally, then wipe clean. Leave the proverbial "light coat of oil" on all metallic parts.

            Nothing's nicer than a well-maintained weapon

Anyone have any experience with a Tico Tool?

I'm picking up my first shotgun today and someone recommended this rather than the standard cleaning kit.

I just use a boresnake about once a year, my mossy eats anything I feed in it flawlessly whether its dirty or not.
