Cleaning my uncle's shotgun

I'm heading over to visit my uncle (he's giving us a gorgeous wood dining table). He also has a shotgun that he's been wanting to make sure is reliable (he hasn't touched it in 8 years!).

I was offering to come down to bring all my cleaning supplies to help him do it.

All I know is that it is a Mossberg pump 12g. I have a Remington 870. Are the take-downs similar? If they aren't is there a video of a Mossberg that I can watch that applies to all other Mossberg pumps? Or is each mossberg totally different from the other (with respect to pumps).

I asked what model Mossberg pump he has and he wasn't sure.

Think I've watched at least a dozen take down videos on each firearm I own and then some. Can find just about everything and anything on YouTube these days. When you get there find out the model and look it up. I know 870s are similar to the 590/500 line but still some slight differences in some parts.

As for reliable, I had one that sat untouched for 15+ years untouched with absolutely no maintenance done to it. I checked the bore for obstruction (thre we're none) and took it to the range. It worked fine. I don't recommend you go that long between cleanings but in my case all was fine n

Assuming its some sort of mossberg 500, it will be easy to find a vid on youtube. They are pretty simple, if you can do an 870, the 500 will not stump you.

ok if it is a mossy 500 there are 2 metal strips that go on the right and left side of the reciever. one is the shell stop and i forget what the other one is. when you put the trigger group back in they have to be flat against the sides or you wont be able to fit the trigger back in. this is by far the most difficult part.

My step dad's house flooded and the Mossberg 500 sat underwater for 3 days. Besides sending the barrel to Mossberg to reblue (came back quickly like new) everything else just needed to be cleaned well, dried, relubed and it's good-to-go.

The take down was confusing and seemed complex to me first couple times but now I can do it blinded folded nearly. Everything falls into place in the cut out section of the receiver and from there it's cake.
