Tube extension mod question (drilling dimples)

Alright so I've been looking at picking up a 870 express with out the tube extention. Plan on putting one on later down the road.. But I think the one I'm looking at comes with those dimples.

I've looked around and seen the only way to really add one is that tool which I've read is horrid or to drill and sand out the dimples.

Only problem wih the drill method is I'm not comfortable with having holes in my extention tube for stuff to get in and scared its going to look ghetto rigged and having to either refinish to tube or have rust issues..

You have a hole at the end of the tube extension. Besides the holes left by drilling out the detents are covered by the barrel ring so nothing can get in there. So you points are mute.

I have removed thousands of detents by drilling just like in my "how to video" on my web site www.aiptactical.com. The tool you speak of is a pricy tool just to use once and in my video I explain how using such a method can damage your weapon and result in a factory repair. If the tool was a better method I would use it. Problem is that is that if it causes a stress crack in the tube braising I can't see it and it will fail under use by the end user. I warranty my weapons for two years and would then have to replace his receiver.

Since your here you have a favored tube brand on the cheap?? I was thinking going back with the Remington tube. Worked fine on the last 870 I had figured there couldn't be much of a difference between tubes..

I use Wilson Combat on my personal weapons and feature them on my Custom Builds. They are the best value out there.

The Remington works fine when installed correctly but cost more then the Wilson and I don't like the barrel bracket maring my barrel. The Wilson does not require a barrel bracket for support as it has a stand alone mag tube coupling. The Remington requires the bracket for support.

OP: what did you end up doing to install the extension tube?

I recently got a new 870 and it looks like you can screw on the extension tube. Currently, my mag tube is just covered by a threaded cap. Can someone correct me if I'm wrong?

Just use a dremel to take down the dimple. Wilson/Scattergun Tech makes the best cheapest extension out there. About half the price of a Nordic though with the Nordic +2 and the extended cap, I am able to get +3 and stick 1/4 inch past my 18.1 inch barrel.

When you remove the magazine cap, you will see a plastic cap with notches. You will need to remove that by pressing it down into the tube, then turning it a few degrees so it can be removed (careful, it's under spring tension). Then you will notice the two divits on each side of the tube. Those will have to be removed for the shells to slide into the magazine extension.

Oh damn, I see it now. So I guess some people filed the dimples down. I'm not a fan of drilling so I'll try to file it carefully as I can. Thanks

+1 on the Wilson tube, you can also pick which side you want the sling to mount on. Great for lefties, or those who prefer just a carry strap type of sling in the center. Vang Comp also makes great ones if you want a standoff device built into it, but I recall they cost a bit more than Wilson.
