i don't have a lockable trunk in the traditional sense like a camry or corolla, malibu, s200, dodge charger, etc. (mini-suv here).

so an ffl informed me i didn't need to lock the firearm (was in a box) because it was disassembled. doesn't sound right to me. i locked it anyway moving it into a soft case bag.

i didn't think that's right because i can do the same for my AR let alone a pistol (break them into 2 parts) and be free of the damn lock. (which i hate now that i don't have a lockable trunk).

You don't need to lock rifles or shotguns, they just need to be unloaded.

I don't think you need to lock an unloaded handgun either but I know it needs to be in a locked container.

i'm referring to the federal law. i think you're quoting state law. both do need to be unloaded of course.

i'm sure this could fit into the general section but it was suprising to hear it on shotguns, just because it's in 2 pieces. i'm in a gfsz zone (litereally 1.5 blocks from the schools tennis courts and track and field). hence it was more a curiosity question and validating if it was fud.

sorry on terms. i meant both in a locked container or locked on a gun rack as federal law has on long guns.

As far as I know, long guns do not need to be locked or in a locked container. When I go to the range, I throw them in the back seat in their cases unloaded (of course), but I don't lock them (my long guns barely fit in my trunk). If I have my handguns, I also throw it in the back seat (in a case), sometimes the trunk, but it's always locked during transport as per laws.

The federal Gun Free School Zone law says all firearms need to be unloaded and "in a locked container, or a locked firearms rack that is on a motor vehicle" while in a school zone. I don't see any exemption for firearms that are disassembled.
