Rem 870/Mossberg 500 question

Should I purchase the Rem 870 or Moss 500?

I've only fired one shotgun in my lifetime. A few years ago I was out with a police srt and got to fire about 50 rounds with the mossberg. Yes it was painful but during the rush of the moment I didn't really notice it. The next morning my shoulder was in pain. But then again if a person had to use a shot gun they wouldn't need to fire that many rounds in an hour or so.

So for those that fired a Rem 870 and Moss 500 before. Is it true that the Rem 870 has less of a recoil then the Mossberg 500? I plan on getting a Rem 870 with the Knoxx stock.

I have fired the Remington 870 express when i was younger and i own a Mossberg 590. There is no major differences in the shotguns nor does one have more recoil than the other. They are both great shotguns for their price and it really comes down to personal preference since the differences are minor.

I'd go 870. Not because of less recoil (theres no difference between both in stock configuration) but because of the amount of parts available for it to upgrade when you decide to do that.

The knoxx stock is really good at reducing recoil though.

Isn't there slight "trigger lag" in the 870 compared to the mossberg? From a speed or competition point of view?

I've noticed it too. Also, the Rem. 870 is steel while the Mossy is aluminum. I'll stick with 870.

Whichever you chose you can add a better recoil pad. As far as aluminum vs steel remember what the AK reciever is made of. I've never had or had seen a problem with a Mossberg reciever even when shooting 3'' Mags. If possible try a 870 and see which one feels good to you, I'm not positive if the stocks are the same length. My kid trains with the Mossberg and out of all the rounds used to qualify they had no breakdowns "they were using old Mossbergs" that have seen thousands of rounds of 00 Buck go thru them. With all that said it still comes down to personnal choice,You won't go wrong with the 870 or the 500.

it really doesnt matter that much. both are good guns. its all personal preference.

my personal preference is mossberg for only one reason. i like where the controls are located. thats it.

I actually have one of each. The 870 is my hunter, the 500 carries 7 rounds of 00 buck.

I shot both. The Mossberg has a better safety and release button. jsut more conveninet locations. I think both shotguns are great. its really a matter of preference. personally see if you can find someone who has one of each in similar configurations and possibly ask if you can shoot it. THAT will tell you which youre more confortable with.

I used to have that stock on my 500. It sucked because it was uncomfortable and always left a red mark on my shoulder after each range trip. When I got my 870, it came with a simple speedfeed stock with soft buttpad, problem solved.
