Picking up a shotgun

I guess the only stupid questions are the ones not asked, and mine. I'm picking up the first shotgun I've purchased in the state and I thought I've seen somewhere that for handgun purchases you need to show evidence of a safe, or else you have to pay for a safety device. If that is true, does it extend to shotguns? Do I have to bring the receipt for my safe?

Somebody can probably answer this with more authority than I can, but I haven't ever had to give proof of a safe for a long gun. The last time I bought a shotgun, the guy at the shop told me that I'd have to buy a lock if there wasn't one included in the box with the gun (there was- I think most manufacturers are pretty good about including locks with their guns now). The last two rifles I bought, though, nothing was ever said about locks or safes. One was brand new and came with a lock anyhow, the other was used with no lock and no concern on the part of the shop owner.

I think you'll be able to get out of there without buying a lock, but I'd at least jot down the make and model of my safe to have on hand in case the shop has a policy about locks or proof of storage.

I just bought a rem 870 at turners through a private party transaction, the only thing they asked me is "do you have a gun safe!" in the paperwork it asked make and model of my gun safe. i do not have one, but have been looking for one so i knew a make and model to put on the paper.

Print out the form and bring it with you in case the shop doesn't have it or hasn't heard of this. Many shops don't know all the rules.

Or just buy a cheap lock and bring the receipt.

I am trying to sell my shotgun, and I have only had it about 6 months. I still have the original Mossberg lock.

It worked for California once, but apparently FFL's cannot use it again when the gun is resold. Why?

It is the SAME lock the met the rules the first time.

This is another California scam forcing people to pay more and go through more headache, even though a lock is a lock is a lock.

I keep having to raise the pain for my buyer, and I am trying to be as reasonable as possible.

Somebody needs to sue California, even on this more trivial stuff.

It is an infringement of my rights to have to force a buyer to buy a lock, when the gun already has one that works FINE.

I just bought a Mossberg 500 from Big 5 and it came with a lock, but I didn't even have to lock it up when I left the store. The Salesman didn't say anything about locking it up, so I just left the store with it inside the box not locked. I feel your pain Databyter, I have about 5 locks I keep having to buy everytime I buy a firearm. Ridiculous!

This seems wrong.

The basic requirement under the law is that each firearm which is transferred in the state must be accompanied by a locking device. There is no requirement that it be purchased from the FFL doing the transfer, it can be provided by the transferor.

I think it is the FFL who is scamming.

When you fill out the form make sure you know the brand and model.

Once you fill that out and sign your done.
