Is this the new style 870 or older style with the short magazine tube (4+1)?

The mesa tactical sidesaddle is expensive but worth it, brownells is good for the magpul gear.

Mines shoots slugs perfectly. Shot it with the original stock just fine. I'm sure with my new stock it would be better. However, I didn't have slugs with me on my last range trip.

I loved seeing those big holes in the target!

Oh...and I am yet to run into ammo that it doesn't like. I just bought a variety at Walmart and they all went bang!

This is what I ordered for my 870 - 6 round with pull tab. Ordered both with back panels and ordered an 870 specific cut back panel (gonna use to cut out the other 2). I like the quick ability to reload or pack a specific load-out.

The other option I was considering was the Mesa Tatical with top rail (was gonna mount my AP PRO). Decided against it now but may change my mind later.

*Take the above with a grain of salt - my first shotgun and it still hasnt been parolled.

I did the following to my HD 870

                      Knoxx Recoil reducing stock
                      Hogue fore end
Mesa Tactical 6 round side saddle (WELL worth the money)

A good light is also helpful. That's all you need. Before you make it your go-to HD gun, take it out and put a good number of rounds through it to familiarize yourself with its operation and to make sure everything is working properly.

I think you should shoot the gun a few times before you start to ninja it up..

                          But congrats on the buy

Stay away from Winchester Universal bird shot (the Wal-Mart bulk pack stuff) generally speaking. Most any brand of "rifled slug" should work just fine. If you just want to blast some to work the gun in, buy some Wolf. It's as cheap as it gets and goes bang every time.

For birdshot loads, if you have a Wal-Mart close by, the Remington Gun Club and Federal Top Gun target loads will usually both give good to excellent results and won't cost you an arm and a leg. For buck shot, Federal and Hornady are the top shelf. Fiocchi buck usually performs well. Remington buck usually runs okay. The Winchester "military grade" buck shells that show up at Big 5 and elsewhere on sale are crap IMO, and I wouldn't waste time with them.

Part of the fun with getting a new shotgun is figuring out which shells deliver optimum performance. Guns vary from one to the other and the ammo one gun likes another gun might not. This means you have to shoot it, sometimes a lot, to find what works best.

Before you start breaking in your new 870 on the range, spend a few minutes looking at this page. The owner of AIP Tactical posts here under the screen name aippi and I am sure he's forgotten more than any of us will ever learn about the 870. His information on install and cleaning is spot on.

Finally, I agree with CK_32. Learn to shoot the gun, then shoot it some, before you start hanging tacti-cool stuff all over it.

CK & BigDog...I completely agree. I plan on putting some rounds through the gun to begin with and add the other stuff down the line.
