What Happens to This Shotgun?

Heard a story from a friend the other day. He said his uncle bought a shotgun from a guy in Nevada with out proper transfer. He brought the gun back to California and has been using it until he died last month.

Now, the gun has been offered to the Nephew. He doesn't know what to do with the shotgun. Can it be made legal again without any paperwork?

I am in no way suggesting illegal activity, but at present CA does not track long guns unless its a RAW.

The government does not know how many long guns you own, their makes or models, or where you got them. Until 2014...but that only means for new guns purchased.

If the gun is not an illegal AW or a SBS, it is legal. The sale to a non NV resident in NV was against federal law and it was illegally imported into CA. But, the gun itself isn't illegal. The estate can legally transfer it to the nephew. If it is C&R, no paperwork would be required.
