    870 - extractor jumping

OK so I haven't posted here in a while... my Border Patrol 870 has been through a few tactical courses and then started collecting dust. I took it out last weekend and shot some Sure Shot through it. in 50 rounds I had 3 type3 malfunctions where the shell failed to extract due to the extractor jumping the rim. It was a pain in the *** because I brought my best friend out to shoot who also owns her own 870 and has lots of training through Frontsight... (we always joke argue about what school is better) and my 870 performed like poop.

do I need a new extractor? this thing has got a little over 2000 rounds through it of various buck, slug and shot... I took it out and looked at it.. APPEARS to be OK but I really have no idea.

also where do I get a new extractor?

Unless the extractor is damaged it probably does not need replacing. Make sure the extractor's spring and plunger move freely. The spring may need replaced if weak. The plunger should be between the extractor and the extractor spring.

    Clean the chamber well.

What type of ammo were you using? I've never heard of "Sure Shot", is it steel cased?

I get 40+ year old 870's in and have never had to change an extractor. the extrator spring simply returns the extractor to position and has no effect on it extracting the spent shell.

I believe you need to go to www.aiptactical.com and click on the red link "Install and cleaning" and make a cleaning/polishing rod like on that page. Clean the chamber out per the instructions on that page and try the same ammo again. If you have any issues change ammo and I bet your issue goes away. So, combination of dirty chamber and cheap ammo equals extraction problems.

Aippi - I have done that. I used to frequent the shotgun forum a lot a couple years ago, and I have shot thousands of rounds without so much as a hiccup (I think I had 1 type 3 during a 3 day tactical shotgun course before)

Remington Sure Shot is brass based!
it's not the best, but it certainly isn't winchester superx

I never have problems with high brass based buckshot, but birdshot for some reason was being a ***** to my friend.

I don't know what a type 3 is so that does not tell me anything.

If the extractor is tearing through the rim of the shell then the extractor is doing what it is designed to do and that is grab the rim of the shell. It is tearing through the rim because the shell is sticking in the chamber. If it was not sticking it would come out. Not hard to figure that out.

I am simply stating the issue is the chamber or the ammo or a combination of both. You don't feel it is the ammo so it has to be chamber.

Its not ripping the rim... it is leaving the shell intact and in the chamber as the weapon is cycled, causing a double feed (known as a type 3 malfunction)

I think i might be asking for help in the wrong forum here...

Have you looked at the extractor to see if there is crap gummed up in the lip of the extractor? That can also cause it.

OK, take it to a gun smith. Or, get some different ammo and see if that is the issue. Your money your call. And this is the right forum when you learn to use normal terms and not some mess you picked up in some high dollar shooting class.

Since it is not tearing the rim it could be as Swifty said and you simply need to pull the extractor out and clean the plunger and spring. Clean the channel the spring and plunger are in also. On my web site www.aiptatical.com there is a how to video on changing out the extractor that will show how to remove it and install it.
