what would be a good shotgun for home defense and for some clay shooting or to take it to the range?? a shotgun under $500

Remington 870 with a 28" barrel. You can always pick up an additional 18.5" barrel later on if you wish for ~$100.

Examine an 870 in the store before purchase, based on what I hear some are not great, will not cycle the shells smoothly, the recoil pad badly aligned to the stock, etc. etc. Back when I bought one 20 years ago they were all OK, with the best reputation. I traded it. I would not expect to get one its equal if I bought one today (based on what I read in gun forums).
