What choke are you using for 00 Buck?

I'm averaging an 11-inch group at 20 yards with an Improved Cylinder extended Carlson choke. Has anyone gone to a Modified or tighter and how were your results? The photo was 10 shots at 20 yards. It's not flit-control tight but I think its pretty good for just RIO 9 pellet 00 Buck.

IM or Mod should shoot a bit better. What are you goals/target and at what range? If you still want the ability to shoot slugs, that may limit how tight you can go.

This shotgun I don't plan to use slugs beyond the IC choke. I just wanted the tightest buckshot group as possible at 35 yards max.

riot shotguns have traditionally been choked Cylinder.

you want to keep every one of those 9 pellets as round as possible. they don't behave the way birdshot does.

IMO, Improved cylinder would be best with the slugs and buckshot.

I only use buckshot for home defense, so I stick with a cylinder bore. I suppose if you’re shooting buckshot out to 35 yards you might want something tighter.

OK; here's where the Vang Comp Process comes into play. My HD M500 has an 18" Barrel that I had Vang Comp modify. It puts any kind of OO Buck into 7" at 25 yards. when talking HD you might get by with a Cylinder Bore, but keep in mind you are talking 15" at 15 yards and another inch for every yard past that. At 25 yards you are looking at a 25" pattern where some of your pellets are going to miss your man sized target which opens up Liability Issues big time.

The Ventura County Sheriffs Dept. has Stopped using shotguns in there patrol cars because of the limited ranges they can be used at. I have been trying to get them to Vang Comp their barrels, but recently found out that they had drilled some port holes in some of their barrels and Han Vang found out about it and sued them and won ! That was many years ago when Hans was still located in Santa Barbara which is right next door to Ventura. I have been trying to get them to use Cody now as Hans sold the company to some guy in Las Vegas and Cody runs the company now. (Package Deal.?)

It should be noted that Brenneke Style Slugs will go thru a Full Choke easily. The purpose of the Vanes on the Slug are to collapse going thru the Choke as opposed to a solid Foster style slug that gets "Swaged Down" to go thru the hole.

The Vang Comp Process is similar to a Cylinder Bore Barrel with a "Jug Choke" at the muzzle. You'll have to look up Jug Choking, which was popular in the 1800's, the Explanation is too long for me to write up today. My Breakfast is just about ready..

The 15 yard pattern is 3"x3" and the 20 yard Pattern is 2"x 6" .

Anyway that's my .02 on this subject.

7 inches at 20 yards is unheard of. Are you talking about this mod that Vang Comp does (Lengthen forcing cone, Backbore, and Ports) . its like $295 for the package. I might send my 590A1 . But the Choke question was really for my 24 inch JMPro. I'm using a Carlson extended choke tube and my 940 SPX tactical that's in gun jail right now < this model came with a choke. But appreciate the very informational reply on the tread.

OK, an Explanation of "Choke" is in order here : The Choke in any barrel is the difference in the Bore Diameter before the Diameter of the Constriction at the end of the barrel. or Choke.

FYI: the Standard 12 ga. Choke Diameters are,,, Cylinder .730, Skeet 725, IC .720, Light Mod .715, Mod .710, Improved Mod .705, Full .700, X Full.690, XX Full .680.

Vang Comp Back Bores the barrels to .745 and the last 2" of the Barrel tapers back down to .730 for .015 Total Constriction or effectively, a "Light Mod Choke".

The Forcing Cone is lengthened to 3" which results in a less abrupt / smoother transition of the Payload from the Hull to the Bore .(Recoil Reduction)

The Ports in the Barrel are before the Choke back down to .730 . This relieves pressure behind the payload, so that it essentially is "Coasting" thru the Choked portion of the barrel (at @1200fps?) Also reduces Recoil and Shot Deformation.

This is exactly how a Cutts Compensator works! 100464613.jpgNote: the Relief Cuts before the Choke tube.

My Citori CXS 32" 12 Ga. has Back Bored Barrels that are .740 in Internal Diameter. For Skeet I run a Cylinder Bore Choke tube (.730) in the lower barrel which makes it "Improved Cylinder."(.010 constriction) and a Skeet Choke (.725) in the top barrel which makes it Lite Mod (.015 constriction) This is as loose as I can run this gun due to the Back Bored Barrels which were designed to be set up for Sporting Clays . It doesn't have ports, which in this case wouldn't add anything significant to the performance other than making the barrel a PITB to clean.

Thanks Randy. Your Vang Comp description is great.

Decades ago when I got my Shotgun Merit Badge, we had to memorize the different choke sizes, though I recall there being fewer of them then (I may be wrong about that).

Several years ago I was using IM and buckshot in my 12ga Browning Gold to tumble hogs on the run from a helicopter. It was extremely effective.

Another Choke tidbit... Ithaca figured out way back during production of their "M37 Deer Slayer" guns, (1959-???) that they shot slugs better thru the IC Choked Barrels

The Deer Slayer Guns also came with Iron Sights on the barrel since it was designed to shoot slugs accurately at Deer.

I also have a "Buck Special" Barrel for my Browning A5 and also a Hastings Rifled Barrel which produced my best Slug Group ever. Should have quit at the Cloverleaf ???

These guns are essentially .73 Caliber Rifles or Muskets depending on the Barrel.
