Beretta 1301/Mod1-Carrier Stop Button doesn't release a shell onto the carrier

Hey Shotgunners, I am pretty new to the Beretta 1301. I own a mod 1 and have been getting to know it. I have upgraded the fore-end, butt stock and added a sling. One issue I am having is that I cannot easily get the thing into cruiser ready mode, i.e., fully loaded magazine with one on the carrier, nothing upstairs in the chamber. I load it up and push the carrier stop button and nothing happens. Has anyone had this issue? Sometimes I am able to do it with with snap caps or shells, but most times I am not. Would be great if someone has experience with this and could direct me on a solution. Thanks in advance.

The shell lifter will not move when you have a shell between the lifter and the bolt carrier.
You simply have to rack the bolt and then the lifter will move the shell that's resting there up in front of the bolt.

Benelli/Beretta autoloaders release a shell from the magazine to the lifter the moment you pull the trigger.
That shell will be held there until the bolt cycles and then the lifter will lift that shell up in front of the bolt after the bolt is far enough rearward.

In order to store an extra shell on the lifter, you have to sneak that shell on to the lifter without puling the bolt carrier so far back that the lifter trips in order to be able to let the bolt carrier back forward without the lifter raising the shell up otherwise the bolt would push the shell into the chamber.
The common term for this is "ghost" loading.
In competition, we fill the magazine, then ghost load the lifter and then load one in the chamber to get the maximum number of rounds into the gun before we start a stage.

Thanks Randall. Yeah, my issue related to the shell latch not allowing a shell to pass by it once loaded. My mod 1 allows for one shell to sit on the carrier (cruiser ready), which is essentially the same as the end result of a "ghost load". I had to take things apart and stone the shell stopper and now it works flawlessly.

When you experienced this, had you loaded the magazine tube with the breech closed and then racked the bolt, expecting the gun to load a shell to the lifter and then the chamber as the bolt comes forward but the shell was not released?
Because if that's what you experienced, it is NORMAL operation of benelli and beretta autoloaders NOT to let a shell out of the magazine if the trigger is not pulled.
They work that way so you can "select load" a shell.

Perhaps the gun is full of buckshot including the chamber but you want to stop shooting buckshot and put a slug into the chamber?
You rack the shell out of the chamber and the gun locks open for you to be able to drop a shell into the ejection port and then depress the bolt release button.
A shell is not released from the magazine because you have not fired the shell that was in the chamber.

Yeah, I don't think my issue was a new one for the mod 1, was able to find the solution of stoning the shell catch online. I think it has more to do with the brass shells being softer than the carbon steel of the shell catcher and the lack of a polished finish. In any case, the shotgun functions pretty much as designed at this juncture. Thanks for the thoughts.
