    Looking for an 870 barrel.

I went trap shooting with my son and reacquainted myself with my 870. Did well and I've missed it hunting because it has a fixed full choke and can't shoot steel shot. So I looked at Midway, Numrich, and others but didn't see any that had 30" with interchangeable choke tubes. Any know of where the are some? TIA.

The 30" Remchoke barrel was not a very popular option IMHO.
I don't recall ever seeing or reading about one.
I think once Remchokes barrels came out, most folks thought that a 28" barrel with a full Remchoke good enough.

My suggestion would be to look for a 28" barrel.

Corson Barrels in Kingman, AZ. has some 28" SC (sporting clays?) barrels, but they are made in China.

If that turns out to be your only option, I'd talk to him and at least get his opinion on what he has.

Or give Bob Day a call and see if he can thread your existing barrel for choke tubes.
If he can do it, ask him about steel shot size/choke limitations.

Thanks Bob, I was looking for US (or non Chinese) made by a manufacturer I'd heard of. Maybe I'll try a LGS or the classified section here.

Again, thanks Bob. My son did say that there is an option of threading the barrel for choke tubes but I didn't want to as my dad bought the gun for me when I was way younger so it has sentimental value for me.

A handful of 28" with Remchoke.
              It's not PTSD, it's nostalgia.

You can send the barrel to Vang Comp. They have threaded several Barrels for me for Rem Chokes.

If you don't want to thread your barrel for Sentimental Reasons or whatever, then go on Ebay. There are lots of shotgun barrels on Ebay every day. You might have to check back for several days until you find what you want but I can almost guarantee it will show up sooner or later.

Looks like a good selection TKM. I'll take a closer look when time permits.

                    Gunbroker is another option.

as shotguns don't wear out like rifles, I have not problem with a used, low mileage barrel

FYI - There's lots of reported FTE problems with 870 express barrels.

If you get one, you may have to work on it or have someone work on it. Lot's of info/videos out there to review.

Thanks for the heads up Bob. I did see some of those and was wondering about them. Guess I'll be looking for a Wingmaster barrel. In the 54 years I've had it never experienced a a problem. Always did what it was supposed to do (except when pheasant hunting, it went click but no bang. Did what I was taught in hunter safety class and kept the bead on the bird till he was way outta range then flipped the gun to it's side ejection port up the shell went bang. It was one of those Duck and Pheasant shells. Went over to a creek and dumped the rest into it).

Wow, thankfully that didn't end badly.
Any idea on how long it was between click and bang?
I wonder if that was a bad primer or a powder issue.

As far as your barrel goes....
If you had the barrel threaded for chokes, my feeling is that you are just increasing the usefulness of the gun.
It's not like your chopping the barrel.
You'd end up using it more and enjoying it more.

I bet that would make Dad happy.

Thanks Bob. I don't know how long between click and bang, but it seemed an eternity, (things happen like that when one is teenager) if I had to guess it would've been around five seconds or so. Regarding the threading the barrel for choke tubes I'd rather not just for the sake of leaving original. Maybe have to resign myself to take it out trap shooting only.

Fwiw- I’d check Trapshooters, Corsons barrels, or eBay or gb for 30” rem choke barrels - they were usually found on the later iterations of the 870 trap guns (like my 90s era TC) and some other variants and they are around…just not as common.

fun fact- the trap/target barrels have different bore diameters depending on the year…choke constrictions may not be what they seem:

Got my 1989 870 TC out of the safe for the first time in 15 years and lost my data on my choke tubes. I got my barrel mic out and revised my calculations that I lost and those years the TC had back-bored barrels from Remington. The tightest choke I ran the mic through has a .049 constriction...
