So my anniversary is coming up and my wife has offered to buy me a new shotgun.. Remington has had some ownership changes and I know that they are quality isn’t quite what it used to be. With that said, would you buy the Mossberg 500 or would you go with the 870 tactical express? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

That's pretty cool. A completely modular system so you can upgrade or change the configuration to whatever you want, quick and easy. Knowing PSA, the price for any and all components will be affordable too.Originally posted by krypto99PSA 570 looks highly configurable if you can wait for it to be released. Pump/Semi/long barrel/short barrel/big mag/short mag all on the same receiver."Show me a young conservative and I'll show you a man without a heart. PSA is usually good. in a perfect world, I would find a police surplus shotgun with wood stocks. But they’re very difficult to find now. I’ve been looking for years on here.sigpic

I’m really fond of that 500 but the wood furniture. that’s almost exactly what I’m looking for. Although I know the old 870 police was built to a very high standard with very tough internals. I wonder if I can expect the same out of the 500.sigpic

I have no experience with the 870, only my 500. I’m good with the internals, they appear over built, and the system is basic and hard to mess up.
The 500 is easy to work on, but swapping out the wood stuff would mean extra cost.

I may just get the 500 with The wood furniture. I’ve seen it priced pretty aggressively on Sportsman’s Warehousesigpic

An observation and take it for what it's worth. You may look at an aftermarket furniture option. I've a 870 police Magnum that I put a kit from Blackhawk on. I'm sure they make a kit for Mossberg. What I like is there is a stout spring between the back of the receiver and stock that helps mitigate the recoil. It also has a feature in the pistol grip that contributes to recoil reduction (don't know how but that's the claim).Last edited by Grendel Guy; 02-25-2025, 7:49 PM.Comment

I have 2 newer 870s and both have had problems with shotshells not extracting. Searched online and it seems to be a fairly common issue. Some say it's due to a change in the manufacturing of the extractor, some say it's caused by cheap ammo, and a few will say it's the single extractor design vs Mossberg's dual extractors. My 500 has never failed to extract.Comment

I have heard that Remington is having issues now. I have two Remington 870 models, a tactical express and a standard express that I’ve never fired. They are still brand new in box. I’m almost afraid to try them. Considering selling them and just getting a Mossberg or an old 870 police. an old 870 police is damn hard to find now. Been looking for many years.sigpic
