    Visiting California . . . Saiga 12?

So, I'm going to visit my brother in California (outside LA) this weekend. We're planning to go shooting while we're there. Is there an easy way I can make my Saiga 12 reversibly and temporarily California legal?

I've heard rumors that just disabling the gas system so it functions as a straight pull is enough (this was in reference to a PSL, the exact method proposed was to remove the gas piston) to make it not count as a semi-automatic.

Any advice? And, will range owners/law enforcement recognize what I've done, or will I get hassled?

Yes theoretically you could make it a single shot by disabling the gas system. I don't know how that is done on a S12 and if it is enough that if you encounter a pissed off cop that it will keep you out of trouble.

    Guessing its converted?

In CA all shotguns must have:
a barrel over 18 inches and an over all length over 26 inches

In CA a semi auto shotgun has to have:
a non detachable magazine (you will need a magazine lock commonly known as a Bullet Button)

You can have either any (A) or (B) but not both

    (A)
    a pistol grip
    thumbhole stock
    vertical handgrip

    or

    (B)
    a collapsible or folding stock

So since you don't have much time to get a magazine lock your best option probably is to make it a single shot.
Others will chime in on the ability and legality of that though as I am not sure.

DO NOT bring magazines over 10 rounds into CA.

Read this, FULLY understand it, Print it out and keep it with your S12

Yeah, fully converted, and that's a one way street.

However, just removing the gas puck and piston would render it single shot. Or even the plug and puck. Or all three.

Again, though, what I'd really like to know is . . . does this "count" to make it not semi-auto? Be really nice if someone knew for sure.

Early on there was a pump action AK called the PAR-1 to get around the semi auto centerfire laws. This is similar. You may just have to prove to a range master or cop and it is a single shot if they question you.

        Crazy huh?

Edit: Looked at S12 magazine locks, looks like they take serous modding to attach

You could turn it into a single shot configuration yes... but why even bring it in that form? Wouldn't be worth it to me. I'd just spend the money on a cheap pump shotty. Or borrow a friends that already has one.

id' just leave it at home since you are just visiting. post a pic of how it is currently setup. my guess is you need to install a maglock and get a fixed stock. what's all this single shot talk?

If you render it into a manual action (straight pull) shotgun, do not bring/possess any of the parts that would render it back into a semi-auto shotgun.

If you do, you can open yourself up to possessing a "broken" assault weapon (people have been convicted of this).

Closing (weld) the gas ports and removing the gas piston, will make it into a manual action shotgun.

Solar Tactical and other companies make mag locks you can put on a Saiga 12G and AKs to make them California legal without having to permanently modify the reciever with a "Bullet Button".

I would contact a local gunstore to see if they have them in stock.

The lock isn't going to get to him by the weekend unless it's overnighted... and even then it'll be a stretch.
So if you want to be 100% legal, then the options are slim at this point.

And please don't weld your gas ports closed for one weekend in CA.

Prove to a range master? Since when does a range master have any authority to question your firearm?

Private property they can do whatever they want.

If they do not think you are on the up and up they can ask you to leave and or call the cops on you.
There are plenty stories on calguns of rangemasters inspecting firearms.

You just want to argue don't you.

A range master can kick you out. I don't know about your area but ranges are not cheap down here.

yes they can kick u out. i just have a problem with range masters because 99% are *******s that have a god complex so i have a deep seated hatered for them and i refuse to let them have any respect in an athourity kind of way.

ps: sorry for my horrible spelling.
