why can I only fit 4 shells?

I just picked up my Mossberg 500 Persuader from Big5 and must admit I know nothing about shotguns. It is supposed to hold 8 shells and I can only fit 4 down the tube plus one in the chamber. Am I doing something wrong?

Make sure it's unloaded
If you unscrew the magazine screw cap be careful the spring doesn't pop out the spring cap and spring there should be a Green plastic stick (plug) that restricts the amount of rounds. Remove this only. leave the spring and spring cap and reinstall the magazine screw cap. It's a plug the company put in to make it legal to hunt with. You bought a good shotgun, infact the Navy is using the Mossberg 500's for training and arms the MA's with them as needed.

There is a long wooden dowels with rubber o-rings stuck in your mag tube. You have to pull it out.

It probably has a plug in the tube (for hunting)

IIRC on a mossberg you need to field strip the gun, then remove the mag tube in order to get the plug out.

someone who looks at their 500 more than once a year should probably be the one to answer the question correctly though.

If you plan on hunting with the gun...LEAVE IT IN THERE!!!!!!!!!!! A big time fine frowm what I hear if your gun can handle more than THREE.

Or the less likely scenario is that you're using some really long shells as opposed to 2.75"

Big5 put the wooden dowel in the mag tube.
First thing first make sure it is unloaded...
All you have to do is unscrew the barrel clamp screw (What ever it's called)
Then just shake the Shotgun with the front pointed down.
You should see the dowel stick out of the hole...
Just grab it and pull it out. If you plan to hunt hold onto it and just put the dowel in a drawer or something....

If this gun has a dowel in it to limit the capacity for hunting, then someone screwed up. The maximum limit for hunting is 2 in the mag only and not 4 as the poster noted.

IIRC, 5 rounds (2 3/4" shells) is the normal maximum capacity for the standard version of this shotgun. Only if it has the extended magazine tube on it (usually extra $$s) will it hold 7+1.

Thanks guys, it was just a dowel...a little ridicilous if you ask me! Not sure what the purpose was considering you can only hold 3 for hunting.

Where online do you guys go to as your "one stop shop" for shotgun accessories?

I know there's a three shell limit in CA, but I think (if I remember correctly from my hunter safety class) your magazine can hold three. I don't think they require you to have a round in the chamber if you wish to hunt with three shells.

Big 5 installs dowels into Mossberg shotguns? Mossberg shotguns come with Remington mag tube plugs installed in them? You have to field strip a mossberg to remove the mag tube plug?

This model does have an eight round capacity, I just recently got one myself, it does have the longer mag. But I did have the same problem, I need to take that plug out of mine as well.

As I said in my post...the total is 3..... whther its a pump, auto, triple-barrel shotgun or whatever: if you're in the field and the gun can hold more than 3............ be prepared to face the fine/loose the weapon/loose your hunting privlages for a year/or all of the above.
