    pump mossberg vs AK-47??

I ran right at him as I brought the Mossberg to bear. I remember everything seemed to slow down as I brought the Mossberg to my shoulder. The front bead came into my field of view, and I pressed the trigger a little too soon. The big Winchester slug slammed into the left side of the Ba'athist's pelvis, spinning him around and slamming him to the ground.

I'll give this to him--the guy was tough. He started crawling away and tried to shoot his AK behind him as he went. The next big Winchester slug tore through his spine between his shoulder blades, ending his hostile actions. The ensuing firefight only lasted about 10 minutes, but when it was over, 12 Fedayeen lay dead with only one minor injury to the good guys. The Mossberg's performance was predictably spectacular. During the firefight, several weapons went down temporarily, including one of the big M2 .50s. Not an issue with the 590: As long as I kept it fed, it kept working.

I like my mossberg 500 and all, but does that seem undergunned to bring a pump shotgun to play against AKs.

Not in CQB, they faced off before in Vietnam too. Or am I thinking 870... meh, 12 gauge Buckshot works on unarmored targets.

Shotties are good in city fighting in short to medium distances. Even at 100 yards slugs can be fired accurately. Shotties can definitely hold its own in urban warfare.

What he said. As long as the BGs aren't wearing kevlar, the shotgun is a terrifying weapon to fight against. Stories like that go all the way back to WWI.

As long as there isn't body armor (or not much of it, anyway) involved... unless you get your hands on some flechette. Then body armor might as well not exist.

It seems like the main point on that article was that the nice pumpaction shotgun did not let the shooter down and it still got the job done and without a problem. Considering that the gun was not in its best shape. just my opinion.

I don't know if slugs would be my choice in that situation.... but thats just armchair quarterbacking.

The shotgun is a devastating close range weapon, and that is why I have one for home defense.

They'd be mine, after seeing how fast a well-placed slug will but a deer down (immediately, in case you wondered.)

00B is nasty, but a solid chunk of lead tipping the scales at a full ounce? Ownage.

A shotty is great with slugs and 00b in many situation. But you'd be a fool to take it over any assault rifle. An intermediate cartridge on full auto, when used properly will make any shotty look foolish in a firefight. I'll give it that in very close CQB a shotty might have a slight advantage in the initial confrontation, but beyond that first 3 seconds (about the time it takes to aim, fire the first round and pump the next one) the shotty is extremely out gunned.

For 1% of the situation I'd prefer a shotgun, for the other 99% of situations that can come up with I'd take an AK.

The "fool" with the shotgun also had the advantage of better training, body armor, and squad support. I think the poster was saying assuming equal training and equipment, for most things the AW > Shotgun. The distribution of weapons this tends to support the argument AW > Shotgun, as most members in a squad will be armed 5.56mm based weapons and generally only one will armed with a shotgun for door breaching etc. A shotgun is a specialty weapon that fills a niche in urban combat, it has advantages over a AK, but it is a specialty weapon it can't fill of a general purpose/well rounded gun like an AK or similar assault rifle. Then again this is all IMO

I did not call the author of that article a "fool", that is until I read the article more closely.

I didn't even stop. I ran right at him as I brought the Mossberg to bear. I remember everything seemed to slow down as I brought the Mossberg to my shoulder. Look at the story, he rounded a corner, fully silouhetted himself, got a burst fired at him, charge head on at the BG and fired his shotty. The BG in this case failed to take him down with the initial burst than failed to fire again. That's what I call luck on the part of the author. If the situation was any different, if the BG had any appreciale training the author would be very much dead. Matter of fact I would fathom to say that if anyone on this board was the man behind the trigger, the author would be dead.

The author and the BG had no choice in their weapon, it was what they had and they used it. Now if by your post you are implying that you would choose a pump-shotty over a full auto assault rifle to conduct combat patrol? Than yes, you'd be someone I would label fool with very large letters. The author simply used what he had and was damned lucky he didn't die in the process, that was a firefight he should have lost, but sheer utter luck was on his side. His article when read as a whole only commend the performance of the Mossberg, nowhere do I read a vague hint that the author would be foolish to choose it over the AK in the same situation.
