I have owned both. The Remington is a sturdier feeling weapon. TH ePolice Magnum 870s are the best if you don't mind paying for one.

The one nice thing about the aluminum receiver is it will NEVER rust.

I keep a Mossberg 835 camo painted turkey gun for home defense now- no exposed metal to rust, and I got it with two barrels cheap (sub $300).

My only addition was a speedfeed stock (don't care for pistol grips on shottys, and I wanted the extra rounds (don't care for sidesaddles either)), and I added a short rail to the forend for a light.

I've fired quite a few 3.5" magnum shells through the Mossberg and it has not failed or broke- so it will definitely hold up to abuse, just the pump assembly on the 870 feels nicer IMO.

It comes down to price imo as the Remingtons alot more than the Moss.

Yeah the Moss500 is aluminum, but then again so are many of our favorite firearms (ar15, lots of pistols...etc)

I really don't read about that many Mossberg 500 receiver failures...

most side saddles mount to the various trigger group pin holes or to the drilled top rail (a la Mesa) so it doesn't matter either way

I still prefer the 870 for its more solid forend feel

I have an 870 and 870 clone Interstate. Both are good guns, I am partial to the clone because of the ghost sight.

209 is not a bad price for the clone, but they always get you with the transfer.

Of course the 590 A1 would be a good alternative.

I've owned both Mossy's and 870's Either can be good shooters. My last Mossberg was the model 835 which is sort of a stretched frame version of the model 500, designed to handle the longer 3.5 Mag shells. My only complaint with the Mossberg was that after a couple years of waterfowl hunting the magazine catch would on occaision let go and dump the entire magazine on the ground, never seen this happen with a Remington or other quality brand of pump shotgun but I'd seen this with other Mossbergs. I still consider both to be good shotguns. I currently own an 870, no longer hunting waterfowl so a standard 3 mag will meet my shotgunning needs. The model 870 is more versatile in making modifications with aftermarket goodies. Barrel swapping is very easy with either the Mossberg or the Remington.

I went with the Mossberg500 Thunder Ranch for a few reasons.
1)It came stock with a shorter LOP stock..I'm only 5'8" so overall fit was very comfortable
                  2) " " " with a Hi-viz red front sight..picks up your intended target really quick
                  3)Location of the safety
4)I prefer the way the Mesa Tactical shell holder mounts to the gun using the top receiver holes that are drilled/tapped..very solid and clean looking.. a bit pricey but you get what you pay for with this I think
5)Pump has a tri-rail integrated into it so mounting a light takes no more effort other than putting the light on. Don't have to pay for a mount
6)For the $400 sticker price other than adding the shell holder it had everything I was looking for in a HD gun that I'll hopefully never have to get out other than practicing at the range.
7)The 870 felt a bit longer in my hands where the 500 for me just felt better..yes I could've added a shorter LOP stock but that would be more money out of pocket
8)Add the 18.5" barrel with the shorter stock and you have a very compact HD gun that moves through the house much easier than say a 9-shot 590.
                  My .02

But down the road I plan on saving up for an 870 from JD at AI&P Tactical.

It's like choosing between a hot blond and a hot brunette. I have shot both and would take either in a second. Currently I own a Mossberg and CZ in the shotgun dept. Go forth and get one.

haha, sounds like its hard to go wrong with either one. I guess I'll tell him to flip a coin or pick out the one that he likes the feel of the most.
