You can get a case (250 rounds) delivered for around $180. I bought a case, but have no idea how to judge if it is better than any other 00 buck out there. It feeds fine. You can get half a case of the Fiocchi and half a case of the S&B that chunker suggested and see which you like best.

Bang for the buck, try Rio or S&B. No wads though. Pellets will spread immediately. Perfect for close range.

What do you plan to do with your shotgun? Punching paper? Hunting? HD use?

No one can tell you what will cycle and pattern well in your gun at the various ranges that could be important, depending on your use. You'll need to buy several brands in 5 or 10 round boxes and try for yourself. The shells should feed well, pattern tightly at reasonable ranges and should have reasonable recoil, depending again on your use this might be more or less important.

Go get some shells and try them until you find the shells that your shotgun likes best. There is no way to guess.

Go shoot first, get used to the 870. you may want to consider a knoxx stock, I just went to the range w/ that and it's great! But shooting trap w/ a short barrel is quite difficult.

seriously though, any 00 buck or slug will be fine. Hell, almost any shot will work, if it doesn't stop the intruder and he keeps charging, you're justified in letting a couple more rounds go. What you don't want is to shoot through. All depends on where you live and what's around you really...

But since this is your FIRST ammo purchase, and prolly first gun? go get some practice. :-)

When it comes to choosing home defense ammo, it isn't about simply buying a quality round or finding the cheapest price. You need to understand how the ammo will pattern in your shotgun. Every gun is different and will pattern differently. Even two guns of the same model from the same maker will pattern differently.

For home defense, a tighter pattern is preferred. This does two things. A tighter pattern packs a better punch and it helps ensure all rounds stay on target. A stray pellet that misses the target could be disasterous.

The only way to determine which ammo is best for your gun is to go through the exercise. Buy a box each of 4 or 5 differnt brands (or more if you can afford it) of high quality 00 and fire them at various range, and review the results. Once you find a round you like, then you'll want to run 100 or so through your gun to make sure it feeds reliably.

Yes, I realize this can get expensive. If you're looking to save money, I'd spend a little time with the search function here and over at the Benelli forum. There's several good threads out there where people have patterend a variety of different ammo. Review these threads so you learn what a good tight pattern looks like. Then pick one or two of the better performing rounds and buy a single box and see how it patterns in your gun.

If it were me, I'd start with the Federal Tactical 00 with Flight Control Wad. It's generally a strong performer in most guns. I'd buy a box and if I was happy enough with the results, I'd go with that and then prove for reliability. If I wasn't happy with it, then I'd move on to #2.

Lastly, you do not want to skimp when it comes to defense ammo. Look for bargains for target shooting and the range...but not defense. Your life may depend on it.
