Its begun, the new 870 design.

I walked into a bass pro today to look along the gun isle. Look and behold, an entire row of the new 870's with the one piece 6 round magazine.

They had two basic ones synthetic stock and bead sight 18"

Tactical with speedfeed 4 desert camo and ghost ring sight

    Tactical with Knoxx blackhawk stock.

They all had the one piece mag tube, I saw no more 2 round extension models.

I imagine it's cheaper to make, single tube, no clamp, one set of threads instead of two. None of these bean counter types make changes for any other reason but cost and possible liability.

Wow this sucks, I wonder if the Mag tube will be removable and replaceable with a 8 or 9 shot?? I think it's dumb to limit the amount of rounds to only 6... this may sway me to buy a 590

Wohoo, start buying the older models because they'll start to go up in value!

Color me ignorant but why can you not just extend the 6 round tube?

It's a fixed one piece tube with no end cap; so to increase capacity you need to replace the entire tube (if that's even possible) as opposed to the older design where you can just replace the endcap with an extension (and longer magazine spring) to increase capacity.

I'm sure someone will start making extensions as well for this new design but you can no longer use older barrels due to location of barrel lug. No end cap? Wow so no extensions as well?

Extend the mag tube??????????? to what???????????? no other barrels will fit this weapon. Since there are no other barrels to fit this there is no reason to add an extension. You could but there is no reason to.

This is the purpose, to limit the use of the weapon and require you to buy another for Sporting use. The new owners of Remington "Freedom Group" are showing us the future of their weapons line and their marketing strategy.

I posted this issue weeks ago and few people understood the implications for the future. The fact that there are 110 barrels made for the Remington 12ga 870 have made this the most versatile pump shotgun on the market. This may not be the case years from now.

Mossberg has had this type of design since forever. With millions of 870s out there i doubt prices are all of the sudden gonna go sky rocket.
The guy in the video link said addition to the 870 line not replacement. Looks to me like its nothing more than a tactical/home def model of the 870. IMO this is aimed to the buyer who wants a tactical HD shotgun without having to go out and buy barrels stocks and fore ends and extended mag tubes clamps bla bla bla etc.

I'm fine with it as long as this is just an extension of their current product line and not a design that will be instituted across all the 870s.

From a purely tacitical stand-point, is it better to have a fixed mag-tube?
