I got an 8 rounder with my used Mossberg, so I didn't have much of a choice, and this is probably me rationalizing it, but I don't see any reason to not get the 8, unless if you don't like how it looks. It's only a little longer, so the weight difference on the carrier is going to be pretty small. Of course you'll have the weight of the two extra shells too, but that's given. If you have a 8 rounder, you can still hold only 6 rounds if you want to, but you can always throw another two in.
Of course, there's the, you don't need 8, but for an HD shotgun, you don't even really need a side saddle, and if you're bolting it on the side of your gun, why not get the largest versatility you can?Comment

How good of a shot are you?

I have the 6 shot Mesa w/ rail and I love it. The only thing you have to be aware of is if you have the standard pump arm (w/ the express) you won't be able to pump it w/ an 8 shell carrier. Other than that, go for it!

How do you plan to use this shotgun? Competition? Dedicated home defense?Just picked up a Remy 870 Express Tactical; awaiting gun jail.
Going to put a Mesa Tactical carrier, but I've seen folks (web pics) with the 6 shell carrier.
I was going to go with an 8 shell carrier, since the forend doesn't cover any part of the receiver when racked back.
I am missing something on why folks go 6 shells rather than 8 other than the forend design issue?
Tnx
If it's for typical HD use, general purpose, the 4-5-6 shell varieties are probably most appropriate for weight, length and shell capacity.
HD guns generally don't need more than what is in the tube given statistics that show an average of 3 or fewer shots being fired (and at 3-7 yards average distance there isn't a lot of space/time between you and the perp).
If you are competing, that's another matter, but then the side saddles aren't the fastest to re-load from compared to some of the speed loaders. Folks work courses where the rules permit with oversize magazine tubes longer than the barrel, use speed load sticks that push 4 rounds into the tube at a time or shell stacks on their belts they can grab 4-5 shells from and shovel into the mag elevator to keep their weapons topped up.
